Advent

From the Latin: Adventus: "Coming." Advent is the first season of the Church year. Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas day. The color of Advent is traditionally purple, marking the preparational aspects of the season. In Advent we prepare for our Lord's coming in three ways: at Christmas; for his coming into our hearts; and for his coming again at the end of time.

Advent begins November 27th.

Our family has an advent wreath on the table and most nights will say that days prayer. This year with our daughter and 18 month old grandson living with us, we will be even more faithful to this practice. Children like tradition.

Big church service tomorrow for the beginning of Advent, choir singing, orchestra playing-it will be so much fun!

We did the advent calendar thing with our children as well.

I have the sermon to prepare for the 11th of December. I always love the Christmas season as we prepare again for the advent of our Lord.

In Germany, nearly every kid, be s/he Catholic or Lutheran, gets an advent calendar, with a little door for each day, and a piece of chocolate behind each door.

I'm not sure if these are available in the USA. If so, I never got one as a kid, nor do I remember ever seeing them for sale.

Are they made by American companies or imported? Just curious. I went to Catholic schools and we had advent candles and calendars, but not with chocolates. I never heard of that until I lived in Germany.

You can get them everywhere in the UK. 'Marks and Spencers' do the best ones.

yep and I bought one just the other week for Jr Minks who is by the way almost too old for one at age 15
