Most people range all over the political spectrum. Libertarian in most things so long as those involved don't harm others but extreme in others. How many. for instance would agree paedophiles should be allowed any freedom at all? Thieves and thugs most people would want punished in proportion to the crime and dealt with severely if they don't take the hint. The ones I am wary of are those who feel they have the moral right ti tell others how they should live and what they can watch or read about. Book burners of any ilk.
In the UK we have different attiutudes to a lot of things. The NHS for instance, here we expect the government to provide these things-it's more a case of do it or else yet I have an impression-garnered from some forums. that many americans think this is foisted on us.

I can tell you my dad would not be pleased with the "nannyism" the union now adopts. Also the fact they enter into the political spectrum using union funds to support a party the membership have no say in. We used to laugh about a union putting in a dishwasher into a kitchen without crossing union "lines"... a plumber, carpenter, electrican, delivery guys, and the salesman at the beginning and the landfill workers were the old appliance is dumped...all for a dishwasher! I have seen how the union has broken the back of some supermarkets in California, and the workers are the ones who suffered, even going on strike for four months, returning to lower salaries and higher deductions, and the customer now pays almost double for the same consumer items. Many stores have folded and gone.
It that witless? Where does the money go? Ask the Union boss - they are so deeply organized, it is like some charitable organizations where 10% of your money actually goes to the cause.
I have strict views on crime and maladaptive members of society. If a criminal can be rehabilitated, every effort should be made to do so rather than passive incarceration at the prisoner's leisure. They should be working for the public good during their time served - for free except for personal item money. Paedophiles should only be allowed back into society if they stay on the medication maintenance program and agree to lifetime probation ini case they slip. They must also belong to a group similar to AA which they attend weekly or more often depending on their urges.
Much of the incarceration population in the U.S. belongs to the illegal immigration and drug population. Incarceration has become a huge industry bypassing education regarding facilities and workers....and unions as well.
Your health care? I wonder if Americans don't view Canadian health care more often than British. As for "foisting"....never thought that myself, but I am used to both programs: Canadian and U.S. Have no problem here because as with the Canadian program I started paying into health insurance with the very first day I began work in the U.S. I pay very little towards prescription and doctor and hospital....comparatively speaking that is.
What Americans would not like I guarantee is NOT HAVING A CHOICE. They want to belong to a health care plan they choose, not one provided by the government.
Whether the government contributes or not....has little to do with what they need ...because every family and age group has different needs when it comes to health care. I don't know the UK system at all, but I would like the option of adding a "private" choice as well as the one offered by the government, or can a person only have one system to belong to?

I remembered something last night watching Bill O'Reilly on Fox. Canada kept the lid on Fox for a long time. As a matter of fact they allowed AlJazeera into Canada before they allowed Fox. First they wanted "Canadian content" in Fox broadcasting - which Fox refused - because CNN broadcasts straight from the shoulder...nothing Canadian in its content.... Then they dithered around and put Fox at the high end of the cable system, available only to those who can afford the extra fees. Some people were actually breaking the law by hijacking Fox from the satellite feeds....
Now that's censorship.
When I first started posting on a couple of Canadian forums I was the recipient of some pretty large insults about Fox and exteme right wing-ism..... but reading one old forum this morning now that Fox is breaking the Maple Leaf Syrup barrier
the Canadians are happy to see O'Reilly welcoming them and he had an interview with an "iffy" personality who is going to deliver all things Canadian to O'Reilly for his programs on occasion...to explain the ins and outs of Canadiana to him...
Man you'd think Fox was broadcasting overthrowing the government of something... The old war horse CBC gets paid by taxpayer money and broadcasts one-size-fits-all nooz..... and if anyone wants to talk censorship....

Yes you can go provate if you want or take put private medical insurance. If you want alternative medicine then that is private. You still have to pay to the state scheme. Forget it if you have a chronic illness the private schemes cherry pick the profitable stuff and will refuse treatment for things like cancer or alzheimers.
Yes unions can cause problems as well, ypuneed a balance of power. You fimnd those hostile to unions change their mind rapidly when they become a victim of constructive dismissal or downsize. Same with a flexible workforce and short term contracts, great idea unlees it happens to be you. I live in an area where it used to be prevalent now woth fuller empl, oyment companies that had those kind os practices struggle to get staff, people remember.

Same here - things shift economically in the workplace or in not enough workers....or not enough trained workers....
When something goes wrong in the U.S. there is a government agency to handle workplace incidents such as harassment, bad termination, and accidents, and if no satisfaction is found...there are attorneys waiting in the wings..... the US loves lawyers...
well "love" isn't the right word. Except when one is needed!
I wouldn't mind paying into a public scheme to keep things in balance because most of us require only the "health maintenance" kind of care, and then if there is a need because of catastrophic or chronic illness, to be able to add to the caregiving with financial upgrade on a personal basis...that would be fine. I am sorry to hear the government cherry picks out the "necessaries" of health care.... that is very sad.
Shows to me that national health care while good for 75% of the time, should offer another tier of private insurance to which people can contribute as a "savings account" whether used or not over a lifetime.
Sound good? (or not?) WC
PS: What time is it in Scotland....and can I be so nosy to ask where you are located in that beautiful place? My sister married a Scottish football player and lived in Kilwinning, Ayreshire for about ten years....she brought her husband back to Canada with her when he had to stop playing due to an injury.... I loved their accented speech and their kids were adorable...
true Scots the lot of them.....

The e-mail telling me ofa reply was sent at 13.45 now it is 5.30 pm. I am in West Lothian-about halfway between glasgow and edinburgh, 50 miles or so from kilwinning.

It's not the government but the private medical care that cherry picks so you can get a heart bypass privately bit develop MS or something and they don't want to know so you are back on the NHS. Most of those who criticise the NHSare more than happy to call an ambulance if they need one or go to casualty in an emergency-they don;'t complain then but take it for granted

Pretty much the same as here I suspect.

LOL I always threaten when I start to fall apart in my dotage, I am going to hold up a bank....it will never get to the "robbing" part and my Toys R Us gun won't fire anyway...
But I will be housed in a Federal Prison, taken care of by the government, three squares and a roof and medical care.
It is just past 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time here....so you are +8 hours....

Censored News?
I think this is an interesting thread, to my mind all news is essentially biased by either the nature of the organization broadcasting it, nationality, governemnt control, business demands, rating pressure etc etc. We have quite a few of the American station here such as Fox and CNN etc, I think its ludicrous to suggest they are censored at all. But they do definetly have editorial policies regarding their content and have a certain format to they way they present news, just as the Public and Commercial broadcasters in the U.K. and Ireland do. I like watching the American shows as it gives an interesting insight into the way the mainstream media works over there. I think the biggest influence by far is that all these major networks are commericial enterprises and they all try to maximize their ratings and market share, this tends to make them a bit tabloidy and not particularly in depth, but they do have some interesting discussion and opinion shows. I think in terms of war reporting and that sort of thing, its inevitable that T.V. networks do not want to seem unpatriotic or offend their viewers by going into stories that throw question on their country's activities, which is happening in Iraq now, happened on British T.V. during the falklands, and all other conflicts I can think of. I think interesting things do happen in wars sometimes thou when the media in general just seem to come to a concenus on something and tend to editorialize in that direction. The British media all seem to be coming at the Iraq story from the side that the war is wrong and that it is not going or will go well, I'm not sure how things are going in the U.S. though its reported that its becomming a quite devicive and polarised issue, between politicians, the public, and the broadcasters themselves.
I think the point has already been made that if you live in any modern Western country, there are many many ways to gather information on current events and that if you get really annoyed with the way some media are covering a story there is no problem from accessing any viewpoint on an event from many sources, so there's no excuse for not being informed if you work at it a bit.

I didn't say it was balanced and unbiased, just a different perspective - as in not the Bush party line.
