So what's the point here? We should all just run away and live in a cave? Or stop dressing in logos and listening to music? Not bloody likely.

Oh not this chestnut again, if a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, did it really make a sound? The idea that reality is real is an assumption of course, but as assumptions go, its one of the best. To people who wonder whether everything other than their concisouness is just an illusion the only answer is, well, kill yourself, and then we'll know whether the rest of us really exist or not. One of the many reasons why science has in general replaced philosophy as the mainstream mode of thought are arguments like this. I'm reminded of the story where a group of hungry philosophers, scientists, and engineers approach a large mountain with a load of food at the top. The scientists work out means of getting to the top, the engineers develop a system to achieve this, and the philosophers starve to death at the bottom wondering whether it really was a hill, how is that relevant to human thought, and what does the word "hill" mean in the first place anyway.

No it doesn't. How do you know the association is real as the only certainty you have is that you are. You know this because you are thinking about whether you exist but you don't know the reality around you unless you can trust your senses but you don't know if your senses can be trusted.

I think means just that and no more.

Therefore I am is the conclusion arrived at by the fact you are thinking at all.

That you exist is a good thing is an opinion, whether it is worth it or not and what is the purpose of it all is open to question.

How do you know the stone exists? If it does not think then does it exist? Does it only exist because you think it does?

Rene Descartes walks into a bar, really thirsty and hankering for a cool beer. The bartender, seeing a person of such celebrated status walk in, thinks "I've got to set this guy up with something really nice!" So he says to Descartes, "Mr. Descartes, would you like a nice snifter of cognac or perhaps some whisky from Scotland? On the house?"

Descartes replies, "Oh, I think not"...and promptly disappears!

Ah sapling your article clearly states you think Much Music is brainwash, forcing you to like... certain music. Well if you feel that way you have 2 choices, fall into the much music void and become main stream or stop listening to much music.

I think it is clearly a false ideal that we are "mainsteamed" only those weak of mind can be so maligned. You were born into a country of Free Choice as were many of us on this forum. Make your choices wisely and only you determine the outcome of all the influences around you. Don't be a sucker to mass media.

BTW Much Music does not brain wash you into liking certain music, I have 2 teens with very distinct and individual musical tastes and both have been exposed to Much Music equally and they were able to make their own choices on what they like. I assure you Much does not play enough 60's to 90's music to be classed as a powerhouse influence on one of my daughters.

As for your being so uptight about this discussion and what is contributed.

Lighten up, we here are a light hearted group and won't take to kindly to some youngster coming in and shooting off at the mouth to us.

Know your place, you are new, you are a teen, respect others and you shall be respected back.

Yes, chopping is a dangerous pasttime, but I'm confident that if you DO injure yourself, you will quickly learn how to shoot with the other hand.

Tell me more about that stuffing....just how much celery and onions are involved?

Look, can everyone stop being so individualistic please? Its making me nervous. Now I have a mortgage to pay, a T.V. to watch, a celebrity to admire, a war to argue about, a car to drive, an immigrant to blame, and a god to worship. Thank you.

Erm, ladies, I hate to tell you this but when a girl over here mentions that she just got "stuffed," a few eyebrows are raised. I am going to work on the assumption that it is turkeys we are talking about because otherwise this thread becomes a little unsettling.

i've not been rude to anybody, and i've simply tryed to say my peice. the fact that people are ignoring me, just shows me how immature most of them are, especially ladycop, i never said anything rude to her, i took the advice i received, and changed the post that she referred to. i cant see what pissed people off so much? i introduced myself, and frankly, i think after hearing what most of you had to say (not all of you of course) that this forum is generally a waste of bandwith.

Now Hadji, people have different opinions. That is the main point of your article, nonconformity. So, you should not be too upset about this.
