Yep! Head of the richest church in the world, but I'm sure they were a "gift".

His product endorsements could be a good source of revenue- for me! I wish he would wear Prada sunglasses. I'd like to sell more of those.:)

head of the church, vatican is just a city where he lives. it is an island unto itself. but the terms are sometimes used interchangably.

I had a catholic army buddy that told me he does not take orders from the Vatican, meaning the Pope???He is the earthly head of the community of believers that Jesus Christ founded on Peter, following the latter's confession of faith (Matthew 16:13-19).

He is also the head of state of the Vatican, which is an independent state, not part of Rome nor of Italy.

I'm not sure exactly what your army buddy meant. Neither the pope, as a person, nor the Vatican, as a state, is involved with 'giving orders' to individuals in the military sense, so in that respect he was correct. If he meant that he did not respect the Church's teaching authority on matters of faith and morals in general, then he was not a very good Catholic.

With regard to the loafers, I have never heard of 'Prada', which I assume is a brand name, but as far as I know, the pope receives no salary so Sojourner may be right, they may have been a gift.

Here is a good website, with lots of information, answers to frequestly asked questions, etc. It's run by a commercial concern, not by the Catholic Church, but it's very interesting and informative:

He's also the Bishope of Rome as well.

Apparently he's trying to sack the tailors who make all the papal garments as well as they made them too short for his ceremony and showed off his red prada shoes. *lol*

sherry wrote: He's also the Bishop of Rome as well.Absolutely, Sherry, I should have mentioned that, and his authority as pope is, at least to some extent, shared with all of the other bishops.

Every bishop in the world today, not only in the Roman Catholic Church, but also in the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Churches of the Anglican Communion (including the Protestant Episcopal Church in the USA), and certain so-called 'Old Catholic' Churches such as the Polish National Church, can trace his consecration as bishop directly back to the Apostles. This is called 'Apostolic Succession', and the members of those Churches consider it a very important part of their religious heritage.
