Do you ever wonder about people who put enormous amounts of effort into being negative?

I'd forgotten what it was like to work with the type of people who work in bars. The reminders since I've been back to work are a bit disturbing. See, I've always been a team player when it comes to my job. The better a crew works together and helps each other out, the smoother the bar runs, the happier the guests are, and the more money everyone makes. When you get a couple people who are only out for themselves and constantly complaining about this customer or that one or what a pain in the ass the boss is, it tends to drag you down, and make your job ten times harder. Bartending in a busy place is stressful enough, but when the girls on the floor are always unhappy and whining, it makes you want to choke them.

I have learned to combat this attitude with a "kill-em-with-kindness" approach. The more they complain, the more I smile and act enthusiastic and bubbly. (Yes, I can be bubbly when the situation calls for it.)

What's it like where you work when you have to deal with co-workers who make your job harder?

And Peg, you are a bartender, do you see this attitude in your bar from some of the servers too? What do you do?

You're absolutely right. Misery loves company. If you're not going to be miserable with them, they'll go elsewhere to complain.

I read this one in a human relations book. As a bartender, you might find this book helpful, because you're dealing with people all of the time.

"Get Anyone to do Anything and Never Feel Powerless Again," by David Lieberman, PHd. It has psychological secrets to predict, control, and influence every situation.

I'm not finished reading it yet, but it is very good and easy to read. I've always wanted to know more about why people act the way they do, and you're questioning Peg about experiences with dealing with people at the bar -- reading up on human relations/psychology might give you some insight. Well, I hope the book helps.

The problem with the bar I work at is this. We will bust butt trying to make everyone happy. While we are getting everyone's drinks, we are also running tip boards, and selling pull tab tickets. Trying to do this all at once with a full bar can get pretty hectic. While we are expected to do this as it is part of the job, we have one girl who is not expected to do it because she cannot handle it. It gets very frustrating for the rest of us when customers complain to us that she refused to sell tip boards and tickets claiming to be too busy. The boss will even do it for her and not the rest of us. Customers won't complain to him because they say it will not do any good, which it won't. I'm the type that always goes the extra mile in any job. I'll bring in food for customers to eat while they watch football. It gets very frustrating to see someone do 1/3 of the job and get the same pay. It's been this way for 2 years and I'm doubting it'll change, so I just continue to do my best. Haha and one day, when I have time, I'll post about some of the customers. Gotta admit, there are favorites and then there are the ones that make you want to puke when they walk in the door.:wah:

Same thing happened where my hubby works. Everyone complained but the situation continued. Then we all found out they were having an affair! :lips:

Hallochen

I think it's harder to work with women then men because in some jobs they just never stop bitching and back stabbing. I don't like that at all. I'm a very upfront kind of person and like something said to my face.

The place I work now has a real nice crowd though. It makes going to work fun!!;)

as a rule.... humans like to be happy...some folks aren't happy unless they are unhappy. My theory and I am sticking with it.

I've known a lady for quite a few years that, in my opinion, is so miserable that she wants to make the people around her miserable. She likes noone and nothing. If you buy her a 6 pack, she's mad it wasn't a 12 pack. As other customers walk in the door, she rolls her eyes and makes rude comments about them. Just a real Miss Sunshine LOL. Her boyfriend just told her he cheated on her. I wonder why.:wah:

How about the person that always has some type of drama going on in their life?

Is it for the attention? I know a girl whose life seems in constant turmoil. She's attracted to losers and wonders why they treat her so poorly and then goes back for more. After a while, it gets hard to sympathize.
