Hi Jaz...Christmas is all about people.....you don't need all the commercial stuff to make it work...all you need is your family, and doing stuff together like the cooking , making presents, playing games....when I look back at my family Christmas in the early 1950s, there was still rationing and times were tough, but those were the best of times....please don't despair...just look forward to a different Christmas this year. xxx:yh_hugs

I second that bez.
I fpr one am not going to get sucked into the over the top buying this year..
Some of my most treasured possesions are those presents that my son has made for me..
I say lets get back to some of the old ways of making gifts, those which show the level of thought and care put into them:-4

I had a second attempt at Christmas shopping today and again came home empty handed...the shops we full of c**p to be honest.
I agree with you Venus...lets get back to making gifts that reflect our love....that's all that counts at the end of the day.

For our Christmas exchange - we shook things up.We were tired of Mom thinking that she had to run out and buy for all 12 of us, the spouses, 27 grandkids and 6 great grankids..blah blah-- So a couple years back we did the gift card thing where u pass the card every time the word "the" was said in the Night Before Christmas.Very fun! BUT this year is different.....you have to bring a homemade gift! I made a great lamp out of a mason jar! It is so cute! and my hubby is giving a car detail from work that he is going to do...It will be great!

I don't know you sweetie, but we've ALL been there for at least one christmas. You'll enjoy it just the same. Good company is more important than what you can afford to spend.

I don't remember how old your kid is. I remember when I was 9. The parents got divorced. Daddy moved out. Things were very tight. Momma insisted on getting toys for us somehow. I don't think I will forget how guilty I felt getting that great big Texaco fuel truck. Sure, I said I wanted it, but I never expected to get it! I have no memories of ever playing with that truck.
My point is if the kid is old enough to speak, he's old enough to know stuff's going on. If you raised him right, he'd rather make you something than get something for himself. His present will be your adoring Oo's and Ah's over your gift.
I think kids are wiser than we give them credit for.

Thank you guys, it was a hug felt that put a smile on my face all the way upstairs.
And I mean that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every year since we have been on our own, and before because m ex-was the original ebenezer!
I would strap my lil one in his car seat and hit the road (after Mc Donalds) drive around with his tiny fingers eating french fries and looking at Christmas lights, him shouting more mama, more(he looooooooooooved christmas lights) until he fell asleep, I did this often and still do, only now I dont need the car seat:(
they grow so fast. Now its Christmas music , still Mc Donalds and a good night, last night for the first time we invited neighbors and they had never done that, a mom and her daughter(single family also) so this year I will wait and see what my guy wants, hard to beleive he will be 14 years old.
-thanks guys.

Jasmund, miracles have a way of happening during the holidays. (Here I go into another one of my stories, but this one proves my point.)
One Christmas, my parents didn't have enough money to buy gifts for my brother and I. They had no idea what they were going to do or where the money was going to come from.
My father was a police officer in Philadelphia, PA, and he was working the subway system. My father and his partner were on duty one night. Early in the morning, sitting on a bench was a brown paper bag. The subway platform was empty. Inside of the brown paper bag was $400.00 in loose change! My father and his partner split the change at the end of their shift. Dad literally found $200.00 to buy us Christmas gifts that year.
Jasmund, don't worry. Count your blessings. Pray for help. Ask angels to help you -- yes, ask angels. They are always willing to help, and if you tell them about your money concerns this holiday season and ask them to help, you're going to see a miracle. Trust me on this one.
Have a wonderful holiday season! :-6
P.S. Worrying never solves anything. Worry is thinking about something that COULD happen. Don't waste your time on worry. If it hasn't happened yet, don't let it concern you.

Hey Jas...
Just remember how lucky you are to be spending Christmas with family and friends. I know that I spent more than one Christmas alone and in some very un-Christmas like surroundings in my younger days... as I am shure alot of vets here did. Those memories make each year special.. no matter what.
Okay.. now SAVE the ELVES and REINDEER... ...

Unless the sentiments of Christmas (joy, hope, love, peace, good will to all) are carried through the rest of the year, Christmas day is not going to mean much. Just another day. If one doesn't actually live every day with these sentiments, why bother pretending? But, if one does live everyday with these sentiments, than Christmas day is like an anniversay of that year and a time to say to oneself, "I will try to live the next year the same way" and to appreciate all the good things in your life.
I cringe when I hear folks worry if they can afford "Christmas" this year, as if Christmas has a price tag on it. Blame the TV commercials and store fliers for false advertising.
I can relate to the Holiday lunch at McDonalds with my kids during a divorce. We just enjoyed being together.
If you want to give a gift, that's fine. But make it a part of yourself. Time spent together laughing, talking about "stuff", singing silly carols, baking cookies, attending a Christmas service together. Just enjoy and appreciate each other.
