our emergancy vet trip
2 days ago our little dog in all his excitement ran out the back door across the deck and went to leap off in his usual jovial self and when he landed he was a yelping shrilling mess in the back yard. We called him in and he limped back inside. I am sure the neighbors thought he was being beaten. We calmed him down and could see no blood nothing but he would not put his front paw down. Nor would he let it be touched. Having no evidence of a wound we just let him be. Yesterday I got a call at work from my daughter, "the dog isn't right" he is yelping and hiding in the bathroom so the cat would leave him alone. She said he was pantind and shaking. So when I got home we checked the dog out together only to find his dew claw bent at an awkward angld. We called the vet and rushed in. The dog by now has lost pints of water from his panting and salivating so badly. We put our dog up on the exam table and the vet asked "does he bite, should we muzzle him, he doesnt' look like he will bite" and together my daughter and I piped up, Muzzle him he does bite. sooo upon further examination the vet determined the dewclaw was pulled almost all the way out, and had to be removed. Our poor pooch was a quivering mess now, and would force his tongue out between his teeth to lick my hand. I had no idea how much pain he was in. The Vet said we could freeze it to remove it or just yank it off quickly and likely easier, and I said just do what is fastest, and before we knew it he had the claw removed. There was no blood and the dog barely knew what hit him. We removed the muzzle and the vet offered our dog a treat for being so good and the poor dog refused from the vet. But when my daughter offered it he ate it. He made a 100% turn around between getting there and going home and i am happy to report he is on antibiotic pills stuffed into process cheese and is on the road to recovery. We suspect he caught the claw in one of the gaps between the deck boards. Poor thing.

Poor old woofer. Brought tears to me eyes that did. Glad he's ok now.
