Setting the clocks back
I always get bummed this time of year. The clocks get set back tomorrow which means it will be getting dark at like, 5:00 and that just sucks. The extra hour of sleep on Sunday just does not make up for it.
Winter sucks. Riding season is over, and I want to hibernate till about mid-May. Either that or move to Hawaii. Who's with me?

I'm with you BR! Leave the clocks alone in the first place-go Arizona! Winter is my least favorite time of the year, I was made for sunshine and warmth!:-6

We'll go visit Susie (tmbsgrl) and Tim! And maybe someone can tell me how I managed to post this thread twice?

Your poor fingers were thinking of the upcoming cold, BR, and posted it twice................lets go see tmbsgrl's new house, for the next 6 months! In fact, my sister lives not that far from her, we can stay there too!
Setting the clocks back
In theory it sounds like a good idea....but in reality she might not want all the FG members hanging out in her new digs for 6 months

It's not so bad! Do you have a fireplace to enjoy in the evenings? Anything to do in your area regarding snow sports?
Think about our UK members! Doesn't it get dark around 3 p.m. in the upper UK latitudes? Our shortest day here has a sunset around 3:58 or somesuch. The kids get off the school bus - run home - and bam! - it's dark!

I just wish the powers-that-be would make a decision about what G-damn time it is and stick with it.
Dumbest flipping thing. What time is it? 6. It can't be 6, it's still dark outside. Okay, how about 5? That's more like it. :-5

Agreed. You know, during the Summer here, it starts getting light outside around 3 a.m. At least it would be like 4 a.m. if it weren't for DST.

I can't see any good reason why the clocks go back and forward.....historically maybe, but not nowadays.
Here in the South of England, in the middle of December our daylight hours are roughly from 9am to 4pm. I go to work in the dark, and come home in the dark.....I hate it, specially as I work in a factory with no windows...have to wait for the weekend to see much daylight.
Pity the poor Swedes though............In the one-seventh of Sweden above the Arctic Circle, daylight is continuous for about two months in the summer, and continuous darkness occurs for about two months in the winter.

I remember those days. Summer was great with daylight until around 10 or 11 at night, but winters did kinda suck.

Summer year round kinda sucks.
Seasons provide relief and change, change is good. The seamless transition from summer to autumn and autumn to winter are events. A change of lifestyle, its exciting. Knowing whats around the corner 365 days a year is boring Mr. Dustbowl.

Air conditioning provide relief and change, change is good. Step out, warm; step in; cool. Instant change. No, I don't. I don't have a mud room. I don't have a parka, insulated gloves, an ice scraper for my windshield (windscreen), a funny looking knit cap with a gay fuzzy ball on it, or an electric heater to warm up my engine. I don't have giant tennis racket to wear on my thrice-socked, fur-lined boots. I don't have a little metal can to carry a burning piece of charcoal to keep my hands warm. I don't have a bucket of salt to throw on my steps to prevent ice ... and hospitalization. I don't have a brightly colored ball on the end of my car antenna put there specifically to help me find it in the snow. I don't have a set of chains to lash to my tires; nor do I get to crawl around in the muddy, icy slush to install them.
Woe is me.

Awwww....that's so poetic Nomad....I'll look at thngs quite differently now....until I slip over on the slimey leaves and frozen puddles.....did that 6 years ago and broke my arm. I guess the problem in the UK is that it is so DAMP and grey most of the winter. Crisp, frosty days are few and far between.

I'll drown my bitterness in a nice cold beer on the veranda. The forecast is a miserable sunny 75 degrees.

Glad I've just seen this thread as I had forgotten about putting the clocks back. Think I'll go to bed an hour later and open an extra bottle of wine
Personally, I love this time of year. Look at what's to come - Halloween parties, Bonfire Night and CHRISTMAS. Yippee, getting excited already!

Setting the clocks back
From todays Daily Mirror UK...
THE SATURDAY SOAP BOX: ONE LOST HOUR WILL COST 450 LIVES
STICKING to British summer time all year round will save lives, make us happier and fitter, fight crime and help save the planet...
By Nigel Beard Ex-Labour Mp On Why He Champions More Daylight
I HOPE you enjoyed our wonderfully sunny October to the full because tomorrow you are going to be plunged into darkness as we punish ourselves by turning the clocks back yet again.
Every winter we go back to the Dark Ages - but what the hell for?
The arguments in favour of keeping this ridiculous and dangerous seasonal change are stunningly weak while the reasons for scrapping it are seriously compelling.
If we don't put the clocks back we will save lives - it is that simple.
Hundreds of people are killed or maimed on our roads every winter and allowing ourselves more sunlight in the afternoon would make a massive difference.
Drivers are more alert in the morning than the evening, and the combination of tired motorists driving in the dark and hundreds of schoolchildren walking or cycling home is too often a deadly one.
Research by the Transport Research Laboratory has shown that there would be 450 fewer deaths and serious injuries on our roads if we did not lose that vital hour of sunlight during the winter months.
And turning our afternoons into nights is not just causing deaths, it's also aiding criminals.
Burglars love to operate under the cover of darkness while we are at work, and here we are handing them the opportunity on a plate.
Even Age Concern has spoken out against losing our daylight because they found that elderly people are more frightened to leave the house when it's dark so they stay indoors.
And keeping that hour of sun will not just save lives - it will even help to save our planet.
If we have sunlight we don't need to turn our lights on, and that saves a lot of electricity.
The Energy Saving Trust has calculated that we would save one per cent of our energy if we stopped turning the clocks back, and you could probably do away with one fossil-fuel burning power station. So this simple step will help reduce global warming, and at no extra cost.
And there is another glaringly obvious reason we should ditch the darkness - it makes us miserable.
EVERY year half a million people in this country suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (Sad).
The Sad Association says the winter blues are caused by the shortening of daylight hours.
So here is a blatantly obvious solution, give us all more sunlight and we won't have to sit around in the gloom at 4.30pm every afternoon.
When we turn our clocks back it puts us one hour behind every other country in Europe, apart from Portugal - and that is certainly bad for business.
We do 50 per cent of our trade with EU countries and if we are going to compete we need to get in sync.
I know from personal experience what a nightmare it is to arrange a meeting with someone in France or Germany when you've only got six hours in common.
It has been predicted that an extra hour of sun during these winter months would bring millions of extra visitors, giving our tourism industry a predicted £3billion boost.
We have all read headlines about the rise in childhood obesity, but the answer to this problem is staring us in the face. More sunlight would mean more kids playing sports after school instead of being glued to their PlayStations and wolfing down junk food.
Indeed Sport England, an organisation committed to creating opportunities for people to start in sport, backed my campaign because they believe adults as well as kids are more inclined to get out of the house and get some exercise if the sun is still out when they get home.
A Gallup poll showed that three out of four of people in England and Wales are in favour of leaving our clocks alone during the winter months, and yet still the law has not been changed.
So what is stopping us? Well, bizarrely, the main critics of a change in the law are Scottish farmers.
THE argument north of the border is that it is a wicked scheme by southern softies to give them less daylight hours.
Claiming that it would affect milk farmers may have worked in centuries past, but how many farmers still do their milking in the open air?
We all know that they are kept in sheds with electric lighting so it would make no difference at all. The simple fact is that Scotland is always going to have less daylight in the winter than the rest of the UK because of the geography.
Evidence was presented in Scottish Parliament which suggested that if they don't turn the clocks back there will be more accidents, but it has since been disproved.
In any case, I have never suggested forcing the Scots to adopt the change that I propose.
Why could they not operate on their own time zone?
That system works perfectly in America, with different states adding or subtracting hours to suit their location.
Why should we be forced to suffer a long, dark winter every year because of a small minority who will not see sense?
So far political timidity has stopped a change in the law but I believe it is only a matter of time before my argument wins through thanks to the sheer weight of evidence and, of course, public opinion.
If we had more sunlight we could see that the facts are staring us in the face - more winter sun would make us all happier, healthier and less likely to die on the roads.
Weather forecasters say we are heading for the coldest winter in 40 years, and thanks to this damaging time rule it is also guaranteed to be a very dark one.
The sooner we see sense and leave our clocks alone, the better

Hmmm AZ (your state) has it right. They NEVER change their time.
Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time. This means that in Arizona they never change their clocks like most of the rest of the country does. On the last Sunday in October, when everyone else "falls back" or sets their clock back one hour, they do not. From that last Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, they are one hour ahead of those states on Pacific Time, like California and Nevada; one hour behind states in the Central Time zone, such as Texas and Illinois; and only two hours behind those states on Eastern Time, such as New York and Florida

Sorry you're blue!!
I used to think I had something called "Seasonal Affective Disorder"
ever heard of it? Happens to quite a lot of people, because of the
shorter days.
I used to get up in the dark, go to work in the dark, 10-12 hours
under flourescent lights, and drive home in the dark. Talk about
SAD!!! :yh_sad
(From an earlier thread, edited just a teense!)
Sending a little :-6 your way.

Thanks for the sunshine! Miss those California rays!
I understand what you mean about seasonal affective disorder, I know it bothers me alot. Less UV's then you're used to, but I read an article how people in Scandanavian countries go to places like the tanning salons, not for the tanning effect but the benefit of the UV's they need, to stay healthy mentally and physically. So I started doing that last winter, I only go once a week, and it helps alot. In the dead of winter snow, for at least 8 minutes I feel warm, and can imagine the sun rays, laying on the beach at Huntington.

I sure wish I could send everyone REAL stuff!
I don't seem to suffer from it (SAD) any more... but I don't have that old job
and I'm pretty much able to get out every day, unless we have some of
that good ol' Calif. "liquid sunshine"! I think it does make a differnece.

well, the u.k. is overcast and grey for much of the year but the dark nights kill my husband. We have to hire a sunbed from October to May.

Setting the clocks back
On click and clack today they had a great idea called "daily savings time" the gist of it being every day at 3:30 clocks would move ahead an hour since no one is really productive in the last hour of work anyway, and at 4:30 am the clocks would roll back so as to give everyone an extra hour of sleep.
