What kind of artwork do you buy for your home and why?

Do you go for a picture because it is attractive in general or do you buy something because the colours match your theme?

Have you ever built the decor of a room around a painting or do you design a room then pick the artwork?

The room I'm in right now has one wall decoration. A blank Zen board.

I admire pictures and artwork but don't put much on the walls although I have two pictures ready to frame and put up in my new flat....WHEN I get it.

I like quirky stuff really and I have downloaded some stuff from the internet....I definitely wouldn't pay a lot of money...unless I won the Lottery......things have to match and 'go' with the decor and it takes me too long to make up my mind now days

Hubby is an artist and so we have several of his paintings on the wall.

I like to do cross stitch and so we have quite a few cross-stitched pictures up too.

My daughter has her daddy's artistic genes and is a prolific little artist, so she also has a lot of wall space. My son isn't into art but he did manage to produce a couple of gorgeous paintings in primary school and so they are on the wall too.

I used to have a couple of tapestries on the wall, but took them down because I got bored of them. There are also a couple of hilarious sketches up, which make me laugh. I have a couple of pictures I've saved from the internet and which I'd like to have printed and framed, just because I think they're beautiful. :)

I'm not organised enough to match the artwork to the wallcolour and I paint rooms in several colours anyway so my house is hardly showhome material. :wah:

We just put what we like on the walls, we like to enjoy it rather than have matching perfection. (And we're nowhere near perfection!) :wah:

My daughters paintings are the artwork-colors may or may not match, but I don't care. They are lovely to have up, a virtual art gallery everywhere!

None of them are on the wall, but I do use them as a background on my puty.

Sometimes I make personalised cards for people and use them then.

I like these piccies too....I did use them at my old house

I have a mixture of stuff that I have painted, Photos that BF has taken (he's fab) and some things that we have bought.

I have an amazing painting in the master bedroom, a 4ft sq abstract/figurative painting called Sense and Sensuality. It's gorgeous! It happened to go with the room, but that was a total fluke! Now I would defo decorate the room around that painting.

I studied Fine Art and so have quite classical yet unusual tastes in art....

KOAN - how are you getting along with your painting?

FYI (I'm a geek) this is from his 'blue' period, which was called so because he outlined everything in a very, very dark blue (not because there's a lot of blue in the painting)

One of my faves!

I have a Renoir in my bedroom

I have a Picasso in another bedroom

The Family room theme is sports - from Signed Raiders group picture - Montana signed Jersey & Football - Jack Nicklaus signed, framed poster.

"Good" Living room I have a large Judy Garland & Mickey R. framed poster with old sheet music collection, and a large Elvis picture.

I don't know if I design a room around my stuff or had the stuff & found the right room? I'm a collector of stuff and make it work.

I just finished it tonight.

I'm working up my nerve to post it.

It's the east wall of Westminster Abbey. I liked the lines of the columns.

Doing lots of just stone is trickier than one would think. The statues were the easiest part.

I always start with what really speaks to me—whether it's a color, emotion, or theme. Usually, I then look for the perfect spot in my home for it. Sometimes I pick the piece first and build the room around it, sometimes the other way around.

Recently, I came across this site called WikiArt Store while browsin I was impressed by how many well-known works were available, especially from modern classic artists. I haven’t ordered yet, but next time I’ll probably frame something that caught my eye there.
Does anyone else use WikiArt, or have thoughts on how choosing artwork first might inspire the whole room design?

I am perhaps not spoken to.

I have paintings on my walls, all of which are paintings nobody else would give wall space to. Which was probably not the fault of the paintings, to be fair.
