One third of the Yellow Magic Orchestra died this week. Between them, those three musicians were a major aspect of Japan's post-war artistic inventiveness. I have no idea whether they considered themselves inheritors of Gutai's abstraction but it's the way I reacted to their music. Ryuichi Sakamoto was mesmerizing both as a designer and performer of the music and its essential stage experience.
