what I'm finding interesting at the moment is all the footage on telly when it comes to covid. Over and over I see medical staff gowned, gloved, masked and face shielded to the hilt. Then standing right next to them are security guards and police officers with bear arms and only wearing masks. What's that about?

Gauntlets. They're called gauntlets when they have a historical military provenance. A policeman wearing gloves would be lampooned by his colleagues. Or were they disposables?

This morning I decided I'm never doing anything nice for anyone ever again.
I was in the local pub and my friend and I were sitting outside and his friends were there and everyone was talking and having a laugh. Then they had to leave and had quite a bit of a walk ahead of them. Because they are getting on in years I offered to drop them off home, no big deal I was leaving anyway. So did that . Two days later I'm being accused of burgling their house. ( the house was burgled one night later which they heard but didn't investigate) Now at first I laughed at the mere suggestion of performing such an act. Then yesterday I was accosted with threats to kill me, hit me and then he started threatening my childrens lives. (no they weren't there at the time) .... others were there ready to pounce if such an act occurred. but really? ME? I wouldn't even know where to start...nor where to fence anything. Being involved in something like that could destroy my career. AS IF!
then to top all that off....not an ounce of sleep last night and it's becoming more and more common if it's not the next door nutters having another fight and throwing furniture around it's the bloke over the road not taking his medication. I've been, along with other neighbours, patient about his condition and there are always apologies afterward ....but there is a cut off point when he plays his music and bass so loud that it reverberates through your pillow. I'll be moving in the next couple of months. Dare I say it? ....I need abetter class of people around me.

Dear "Worried Reader",

Your better class of people comment sounds feasible, but what you describe could be an underlying factor of life in Victoria. I speak from a position of total ignorance as usual, but I have dim recollections of 20th century Australian TV and spin-off films describing Melbourne's police as corrupt and the city being run by working-class career criminals with more money than sense. If there's any truth to that international image, you may simply have entirely unsuitable acquaintances at your local pub.

The picture the world has of Australian pubs is that they have extremely limited opening hours, that customers time their departure from work to coincide with a small window of opportunity, and once at the bar they sink pints of frozen four-X every ten minutes until closing time. Again this may be an inaccurate picture, but if it has any truth you might improve your social milieu at a table of a sushi bar in a quieter part of town.

I learned long ago to avoid doing favors for, or helping strangers, or even neighbors with whom I have only a passing acquaintance, at pubs - or anywhere that alcohol consumption is a significant focus of activity.
I once ended up in jail for possession of illegal drugs after giving guy ride when his car wouldn't start, and almost shot by an overly jealous boyfriend, after giving a drunk barmaid a ride home, AND arrested for burglary and theft after trying to help a nice young couple move.

Your comment of Police and working class career criminals could be correct. I don't know of any though, I don't get so involved with people. One thing I noticed in the last couple of weeks is the "anxy" feeling around the pub. I even mentioned it recently. There has also been a few blow ins not going away as well (hence my situation, but because they are a friend of a friend)

The world picture seems to be similar to ours about your pubs. The inner city public bar on the corner? Almost gone these days along with the inner city music scene. Pubs have changed since the forties. Although there may be some left as you've described. Pubs these days have pokies, bistros, and main/sports bars. Family oriented, and where you take Nana for mothers day lunch. And they are open late. it's a mix of people .

I have to move anyway for work and although knowing I'm in a bit of a rough area, I grew up in a rough area so I understand the people around me. But I'm getting on and there's a difference between getting paid to put up with peoples shit rather than having to cope with it in my personal life. I have new hobbies and outlook these days so it's probably time anyway.

And you'll never catch me in a sushi bar.......EVER!

I hope Biden's new gun control legislation gets up. How could the NRA have a problem with those laws? Ghost guns really?

Ever since Wayne La Pierre took over the NRA in the 70s, their focus has been on refuting any reasonable gun legislation, period.

While I like the occasional brewski as much as the next guy, I've concluded that people who drink in public are basically practicing poor judgement, and are just waiting for the opportunity to expand on the concept.

I disagree. What kind of drinking are you talking about? I go to the pub twice a week (actually less now) I have two pots and go home. I go for the socialisation not to drink per se. I live on my own and its time out from four walls .

Grrrrr.....I got the job last July. (i was beginning to believe the job was a fantasy) The Site is finally up and running. Told that the job starts next Thursday. Great! ....Nope . Monday instead now. That's put me right out. I had everything worked out to begin Thursday. Now i"m running around like a headless chook trying to squeeze everything in over the weekend...........SIGH! Other issues as well, it's what happens when you run a job in a remote location from a major city.

You're probably right. We are half a world apart. Here in the Good Ol' US of A, we like to do things in the extreme. I can drink fairly responsibly, these days, but I can't hang around the average pub for long. You can feel the Mean IQ drop by the hour. And lately too many of them are carrying guns. There's a reason that Marshal Earp decreed that everybody had to check their guns with the barkeep.
But then socialization was never really my strong point.

Tiger Woods was speeding when he crashed an SUV in Southern California less than two months ago, leaving the golf superstar seriously injured, authorities said on Wednesday. Woods was driving 84-87 mph on a downhill stretch of road outside Los Angeles that had a speed limit of 45 mph, Los Angeles county sheriff Alex Villanueva said. Detectives did not seek search warrants for the athlete’s blood samples, which could have been screened for drugs or alcohol, or his cellphone. Sheriff's officials said there was no evidence of impairment or of distracted driving.

Authorities in Cambodia have criticised an artist after he altered photos of victims of the Khmer Rouge genocide.

Irish artist Matt Loughrey colourised images of photos taken in the notorious Tuol Sleng prison. Smiles were reportedly added to some faces.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-56707984
Is outraging public decency still an attribute of the unskilled artist?

My nine year old's Photoshop skills include what Mr Loughrey is described as having done but I'm sure my nine year old has more empathy than to do it.

I'm afraid I find what this man has done as reprehensible. Does he have no soul? At least he didn't try to put smiley faces on the "after torture" photos. But at least he left the children alone. There are many degrees of torture, but what the Khmer Rouge did to those people was not torture..... there are no words in human history to describe what they did to those people.
I think I'd like to meet that son of a bitch and give him a good talking to.

A friend of mine said that road is famous for its downhill grade, and if you're not paying attention, it can get the better of you very quickly.
We have a road like that near here - it’s a forty limit and if you’re not paying attention you can quickly be doing forty five, fifty, not eighty five that takes effort.

In my country we call that one law for the rich and another for the poor. I expect the chap believes he's a good driver.

How on earth was he not tested in those circumstances? What sort of manipulative policing does America operate?

So, if you're already speeding, like most Americans, these days, and perhaps a bit pre-occupied, suddenly you're coming up on a curve and picking up speed because you're on a down slope, then you over-react. Oops, ...

We don't have many of those speed trap cameras here that will send you a nasty gram and and a bill for you to pay, like you guys in the UK.

Do you lot all drive autos? You can't pick up speed if you are in the correct gear. Seriously? you can't control your speed because you're going down a hill?
And please don't tell me you ride the break ......just don't tell me!

I have just discovered a TV series called 'Frank of Ireland'..........If you want to see the embodiment of the worst traits of human beings you should watch this show. It's like looking at a car wreck. You want to look away but you can't.

Thanks, but if I want to see "the embodiment of the worst traits of human beings", I don't have to look very far, these days.

MY old car has a "braking assist" system that in situations such as hills automatically kicks in after I tap the break pedal once or twice. It's pretty good.

As magenta says, selecting a low enough gear sorts out runaway speed down a gradient. Overheating your brakes instead is not a good result.

Is this LA/Hollywood hill the same one which killed Ernie Kovaks?

Nope. He was in Beverly Hills when he crashed. Apparently at a major street intersection.

I bumped into this precis on a database headed "Aircraft lost on Allied Force’s Special Duty Operations & Associated Roll of Honour".

T/O 1805 hrs Villeneuve-les-Vertus,
France and headed on leaflet
dropping mission to Munchen. Page 19 Bomber
Command Losses
1939-1940
Aircraft abandoned over France on
return due to severe icing. Sgt Griffin.
Rear gunner, failed to hear the order
to bale out and was still in his turret
when the aircraft crashed. He
survived the ordeal with little more
than a few cuts and bruises

I would hope Sgt Griffin never had to buy his own pint after that.

If you're paying attention to what you're doing, then, yes, it is easy to mind the speed limit and mange your vehicle properly.
But, we are talking about AMERICA here. Most people in this country drive as if driving was the very last thing on their minds.

Two men were killed after a Tesla car crashed into a tree and caught fire in Texas, and police believe there was nobody present in the driver's seat at the time of the accident.

The 2019 Tesla Model S was travelling at a high speed when it failed to negotiate a curve on a winding road.

The victims, both in their 50s, were found in the front passenger seat and in the back of the vehicle.

Um, WTF?

LINK: Anti-vaccination protesters storm Westfield shopping centre and clash with police

"Hundreds of anti-vaccination protesters stormed Westfield in Shepherds Bush on Saturday evening.

Pictures and videos from the shopping centre show a huge group of people clashing with police as they attempted to enter the building.

Once inside, protesters lit red flares as terrified staff locked themselves inside shops and customers fled.

Officers soon gained control of the situation and moved the demonstrators back outside.

At about 7pm, the Met tweeted: “The situation is now calm at Westfield, W12. Officers remain on scene, and the crowd is dispersing.”"

I'm not convinced panic can have been involved. A pop-up demonstration like that took a lot of deliberate organizing.
