Remember the music you used to bop to?

Post by magentaflame »

I was in the pub. (well needed respite, trust me on that one)
So anyway, I heard a song that I hadn't heard since I was a young teen. And I noticed everyones head bopping when the beat began. It was like everyone was sent back in time to their old pub days. (Cold Chisel was a pub band)
Being as it was not a song for my age group in 1979 but still hearing it on the radio every day I obviously put my own interpretation to the words. I always thought the lyrics were "shootin steel" I thought it was a gun song. Apparently it's a trucking song.  yes yes after everyone stopped laughing because in turn they thought I was singing "shitting steel" AAANYWAY....

So what song have you heard that takes you back in time and makes you want to dance or chant or bop your head when you hear it? Put it in this thread and explain when you first got down to it and if it has the same effect on you now.
SHIPPING steel

The first time I ventured abroad on my own there were three songs that were played continuously on the juke box and they drilled themselves into my brain. Chanson del Immigrante by Led Zeplin, Knock Three Times by Tony Orlando and Dawn and another where the chorus was the nursery rhyme It’s Raining, It’s Pouring.

It took me a long time to get over that.

I still remember my brother and I going through my mum and dads old 45's and we thought this was cool in the early eighties and danced to it. Dad was watching us from the lounge doorway. I think he was tickled pink his own young tweens were dancing to it. lol Still gets me going.
I think it's the same when I saw one of my sons had bought a Marley cd...I was proud.

The song I got up and danced to on my own on numerous occassions at the Barn Club to remember my bestie who had been packaged off to America to be a nanny by her mother (my friend didn't want to go) that was 'our' song the one we both always danced to in the run up to her leaving.

Adam and the Ants were big when I was in my final year of primary school, I bopped to their tunes whilst on our whole class holiday in Coverack Youth Hostel. The teachers woke us up at 7am each morning by blasting 'Tell me why I don't like Mondays' into the dormitories. By the Friday we'd talked them into playing Adam Ant as a treat instead.

NO not really . The Asian fetish. It's a repeat. They are a little behind in pop and rock. That's okay though they are still learning. It's a big stretch.

I thought the Spice Girls retired twenty years ago, it was definitely them on the sound system though. I asked at the time.

I'll look for a video...

I expect we might have different search histories. Your documentary trailer an hour ago said how what you look for gets different results if the search engine has enough background. Mine clearly thinks I'm fixated on 90s girl groups, Kylie, Kate Bush and S Club 7.

I think it's a google thing, FB isn't the first to mess with us. Other than that I have no idea why it would give me Asian girls dancing around. I haven't looked up Asian news in awhile.

when I was a teenager I used to go to King Street in Melbourne and if we could get in, go to the "Rubber Soul" (Bit of underaging going on then, these days underage means police raids not a nice place anymore)..it was all 60's music. Smoke, cages, the works, but when this song was played it became a different place. Heads swayed and bobbed. And you danced strangely.................just like in the sixties!

Yeah I worked out if it has' INXS' in the search instead of 'Youtube' It apparently only shows here and New Zealand. INXS Channel, maybe tailored? INXS have really good beats.(well they did in the early days, Then they became famous and didn't try so hard IMHO) Been bopping to these guys since I was 10.

:P OKAY THAT"S IT!!! I feel violated!!!!

I was just bopping down to the 'Cockroaches' Saturday night song just a minute ago and in the searchy bit on youtube I I see wiggles stuff. I'm like? How does that relate? I'm well past looking for Wiggles songs. why is that there?

Then I came across this!!!!!

The Cockroaches
They were around putting out singles since 1980, but their big hit was "She's The One", with meaningful lyrics such as "She's the one, she's the one, she's the one, she's the one, she's the one, she's the one, she's the one..." Eventually they found their demographic and changed their name to The Wiggles.

• "She's The One"
• "Wait Up"
• "Permanently Single"
• "Hey What Now"
• "Another Saturday Night"
WTF?

Those barstard's fantastic marketing ploy scooped up all the teens of the 80's and made them dance for another bloody decade with their kids to their songs.....The shame! The shame!

This is perhaps an odd admission but today is the first time I've heard this song. The only reason I know it is from the astounding number of parodies over the years, none of which used these lyrics. I'd always thought it was originally a folk song from centuries back but apparently not - this is the band which first released it. Never having heard of The Proclaimers is a measure of my ignorance.

"I'm gonna be" is a song to hype up a pub crowd looking a little dull.
