Request for LESS Forums ? Fora, Forai

Post by Bruv »

When I start a new topic I get confused as to the volume of Forums on offer, surely they could be cut down to save my quandary.

Why the need for 'Travel and Vacation' and 'Holidays' for instance ?

And the there is the 'Pub Nutters Inn' (shouldn't that have an apostrophe ?) and 'The Coffee Shop' .......are they for teetotaler and drunk subjects ?

This is brought on by the latest topic I am just about to post.......not sure where to put it, and does it really matter ?
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

Maybe we should have a new forum to discuss this? :)

I agree with you on this - I spend more time trying to pick the best forum to place a post into than I do creating the post sometimes.

We should be able to create a poll and have folks mark ones they like and get rid of the others?
I expressly forbid the use of any of my posts anywhere outside of FG (with the exception of the incredibly witty 'get a room already' )posted recently.

Folks who'd like to copy my intellectual work should expect to pay me for it.:-6

Turn it into a 'Reality' programme. Set a target number of forums to remain, and each week vote one out.

The range of forums is a historical aspect of the site. Far too much information would be lost were it reorganized, and the Google indexing would be screwed for years to come. The choice of forum isn't compulsory, the management and moderation teams make no recommendation on forum selection, by all means post every new thread into General if you prefer. What we can't do is delete any existing forum area.

I thought that might be the answer........but

How can we change the world if we can't dock a few categories off a forum ?

That is a rhetorical question.

Maybe all new posts should be designated to a few general categories while keeping the older ones.
What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?
She had the black vote all locked up.

I only ever start new threads in a subset of perhaps six folders, I imagine most users behave in a similar way. My six folders are not your six folders.

Even if it is not possible to delete folders / categories (which I doubt), it should be possible, at least, to merge them.

Of course it is. And to delete them. I did point out, though, that "the Google indexing would be screwed for years to come". It's a major concern in this discussion. Perhaps you think it's either untrue or irrelevant.

So this little forum totally screws up Google? Shouldn't we cash in on this & hold the categories to ransom?

Google is a Search Engine. it Searches.

Google indexes this site. If we change the URL of a million posts, which is what's involved if we delete and merge forums, then Google's links will fail. Everyone clicking a Google link into ForumGarden will get a 404 Page Not Found error. Eventually, after some months, Google's links will all be pointing to the new URLs for these posts and the old links will have been deleted from their index, but in the meantime our visitor numbers will have plummeted, new members will have failed to join and our site income will have been permanently reduced. Is all this not immediately obvious from what I wrote?

How many visitors are there to these multidudes of unused fora?

Major corporations etc. change their sitemaps everyday, pruning away obsolete branches. No big deal, and they have far more at stake.

Listen to the IT specialist Lads.

I have cobbled together a website and tried to get it come up with search phrases etc. etc.

It takes time to bed in, it is not as simple and straight forward as you might think, there is a large industry based on getting search engine recognition, a few tweaks can make a site plummet down the searches and it can matter a lot.

Around 90% of the site's income originates with search engine links used by visitors to the site. If you click ForumGarden - Top 5 Stats there's the number of posts in each forum area. You can approximate the proportion of the income which relates to each with some simple arithmetic, all the numbers are visible there. If you can find an unused forum area, I'll delete it tomorrow.

Of the 175 forum areas, only 22 have fewer than a hundred posts.

In my youth I thought Heinlein's novels could be enjoyed but the longer ago he wrote, the less I agree with my initial opinion. Nowadays he reminds me irresistibly of the wild excesses of... I'm fishing for the memory of a name at this point. Umm. Norman Spinrad.

What I failed to recognize at the time was that Spinrad's excess was parody but that Heinlein meant it.

I was a big Sci Fi fan at one time and Robert was one of my top favs .

Then wife got rid of my collection when we moved and I cannot remember anything he wrote .

Presumably about Puppet Masters .

Have never heard of Spinrad -- will check him later .

Never read Sci Fi now as technology news and whistleblower revelations --- real and not so real -- are amazing .

I cannot get enough of the Secret Space Programme though Corey Goode is a real BS merchant .

However , William Tompkins is the real deal -- ex NASA etc whistleblower .

P.S.

Or is he ? Could be one of the best ever misinformation agents .

Wife?? It never crossed my mind, I must revise my ideas.

There are two essential works as far as Norman Spinrad is concerned.

One is an SF cookery book. Possibly the only SF cookery book. It really is a cookery book though it contains no recipes, it is extremely short, it is a work of informed genius. The author has a copy online at http://cooklikeahumannormanspinrad.blog ... -like.html

The other enraged me when I first saw it, to the extent that I shunned anything else he wrote for the next twenty years. I had taken it at face value and been repelled. It is, in fact, a very clever commentary on SF writing in general. Even so don't read it on a full stomach.

The Iron Dream (1972) is an alternate history novel, the bulk of which is the middle part consisting of a fictional fantasy classic entitled Lord of the Swastika, written by one Adolf Hitler. The first part explains that the deceased author Hitler was a sci-fi writer and that this novel was widely praised by fandom. The third part is a critical review of the novel and its aftermath. According to Spinrad, the book was banned for twenty-five years in Germany, but was finally exonerated after appeals.

Am I blind to the obvious?

Where /How do you acknowledge a post either as thanks or in terms of you being updated on their ability to even still respond / being alive ?

I cannot imagine needing such a facility often though something else indicating dislike /disgust / pure hate might be fun .

We turned that option off ten years ago when it became clear that cliques were developing. The site had at that point descended into the online equivalent of barbaric fist-fights.

I am told that emoticons are these days rendered by browsers as actual graphics. Those too can be turned off, not by the site but within browsers by those such as myself who object to the whole notion.

Other than that, one is reduced to words.

Gathering the fallen from the four corners of the earth is not an option. We have spent fifteen years purging the incoherent, the disturbed and above all the Canadians, we have no intention to backslide at this late stage.

You have no idea how difficult it is to dislodge the fans of Michael Jackson once they've established a beachhead, either.

Good Lord

But yes !

Canadians do seem to be one of God's more blatant mistakes .

And it is worrying that Michael jackson fans are still causing trouble . I had thought that we developed the Zika virus to eradicate them .
