Riots in N Ireland

Post by Clodhopper »

I hope this is an unnecessary thread that slides swiftly down the list and off the actives.

Unfortunately there has been a week of youths throwing petrol bombs at night in Republican areas. It is undoubtedly being driven by extremists and even someone like Gerry Adams has been targeted (he now counts as a moderate/traitor in the extremists' eyes).

The extremists are being attacked by Sinn Fein for using children as soldiers and hopefully the community can work it out. But this is a very worrying sign and I'm afraid a Brexit dividend.

The battle of the Boyne was on the 12th of july and It's the marching season for the orange lodge - the violent face of unionism in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Never mind sending Muslims home they still want rid of the Catholics. Brexit and Theresa may's deal with the DUP has given bigotry new life.

Boston USA also has orange marches as well but they don't seem to degenerate into violence like they do here.

Everyone on the spot agrees it's republican extremist violence - so far at least. I agree the power vacuum in Stormont doesn't help. But I don't think this would be happening if the Irish Border issue hadn't been a hot topic for the last year. Precisely what role the DUP has played I don't know. I'm not aware of any particular incident this can be pinned to - I think they are trying to restart the Troubles and see the Brexit mess with the Irish Border issue as their chance. It's not at all clear that they have popular support and I HOPE that the security services have not forgotten the lessons of the Troubles and don't do something stupid.

They're idiots. If they had not gone for the violence there was a possibility that sentiment might have gone to closer union with the south especially after the abortion referendum and the brexit carry on.

Theresa may doing a deal with the dup is a factor as well imo.

Why is this particular riot worth mentioning? 2011, 2012, 2014, last year and now this one.

I dont see the point in mentioning this one unless it ties into the others.

They didn't bomb Gerry Adams.
