We have been informed that it is now only a matter of time before bird flu reaches our shores, and although there are more questions than answers a fatality figure of around 50,000 is being banded about. The Government CLAIM antibiotic/antivirus supplies are on the way even though they admit they don't have all the answers. IF these antibiotics arrive in time, which fall woefully short of the 55,000,000 odd people in this country, who do you think will be treated first? H.M. then the rest of "the firm", military top brass, Blair and his cronies, and then finally the likes of you and me, just pawns in a game of chess. Assurances from the Government won't be worth the hot air with which they will be given. When it boils down to it, there is only one person to take care of.
At a risk of being labelled a prophet of doom, when it does come, the first school or library to close for precautionary measures, with people being advised to remain indoors, there is going to be panic buying on a scale only seen in America - if you don't believe me, think back to the supposed petrol crisis that never was. It is time to act - NOW! Before certain foodstuffs start disappearing at an alarming rate from our supermarkets, start by buying high protein, high nutritional food with a long shelf-life. With careful planning, through non panic buying, it is possible to build up a month's supply of food to sustain a family of four for around £250.00. thus reducing drastically the need to venture out. If anybody is interested in downloading a very basic list of suggested food items, I can post it on the board tomorrow. If you can make use of it, don't keep it to yourself - download it, photocopy it, pass it on to as many people as poss.

My brotherinlaw is a Physician so my family is lucky he was able to get the TAMIFUL shots for us.. but now they say it may not help anyway.

Concerns over the possibility of a bird flu outbreak in Britain have been raised after a parrot that died in quarantine in the UK tested positive for the virus.
The BBC News website looks at the latest events and the potential risk to humans.

A parrot imported from Surinam, South America, was found to have a highly pathogenic H5 strain of the disease while in quarantine in the UK.
It is not yet known if the bird carried the H5N1 variant which has killed at least 60 people in Asia.
The parrot was part of a mixed consignment of 148 parrots and "soft bills" that arrived on 16 September. They were also in quarantine with a consignment of 216 birds from Taiwan.
The Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said all the birds in the quarantine unit are now being culled.
It is the first confirmed case of avian flu in Britain since 1992.
Q: Is the UK now at risk?
As the disease was in quarantine, the UK's disease-free status is not affected.
UK chief veterinary officer Debby Reynolds said the incident "showed the importance of the UK's quarantine system".
Experts have said people in the UK are at "very low risk" of developing the disease at present.
But the Health Protection Agency estimates that if a flu outbreak did reach the UK around a quarter of the population could be affected, with possibly 50,000 deaths.
Professor Hugh Pennington, a bird flu expert from Aberdeen University said there was no need for any anxiety:
"It's not a threat to the British population even if this bird had it.
"It's not a threat to the poultry or to the turkeys... I would be surprised if it had caught it from a migratory bird, so it's an interesting development, but not one that should cause any public anxiety at all."
What steps has the government taken?
The government has published plans on how to cope with a possible flu pandemic.
This includes the purchase of around 14.6m courses of the antiviral drug Tamiflu - enough to treat around a quarter of the UK's population.
The drug reduces the severity of flu symptoms and can also mean the length of illness is shortened.
Ministers have also arranged for 2-3 million doses of H5N1 vaccine which could offer some protection against the virus.
GPs have been sent guidance on how to manage an outbreak. This includes the priorities for who should receive anti-flu drugs in the event of a pandemic.
Health secretary Patricia Hewitt has said Britain is one of the best prepared countries to deal with a pandemic of bird flu.
Ms Hewitt told the House of Commons Britain was doing all it should be to prepare for any future outbreak. She said: "I'm satisfied that we are making exactly the preparations that we need."
What else is being done?
British scientists are also travelling to South East Asia to investigate how bird flu could be tackled in the future.
Experts from the Medical Research Council (MRC), led by Professor Colin Blakemore, are expected to visit China, Vietnam and Hong Kong.
Their findings on how to tackle an outbreak of the virus will be presented to an international conference in London in December.
Professor Blakemore said it was "almost certain" that avian flu would reach the UK.
"How we deal with it will depend on how well we are preparing now."
Peter Dukes, head of immunity and infection at the Medical Research Council, said identifying how the disease mutates was crucial in making an effective vaccine.
"What the experts say is that there isn't just one kind of the virus that's called H5N1, and if we took the virus that has appeared in a relatively small number of people in South East Asia, if we took that virus and made a vaccine against it... it wouldn't necessarily protect us against whatever may ultimately emerge as the virus adapts itself to the human population.

The fear, after cases in Turkey and Romania, is that the deadly H5N1 form of the virus will spread across Europe.
Because it is carried by birds, there is no way of preventing its spread.
But that does not mean it will be passed to domestic flocks. Experts say proper poultry controls - such as preventing wild birds getting in to poultry houses - which are in operation in the UK, should prevent that happening.
In addition, they say monitoring of the migratory patterns of wild birds should provide early alerts of the arrival of infected flocks - meaning they could be targeted on arrival.

I'm glad there are at least a couple of people out there taking it seriously. I wonder whether the p***taking is a healthy dose of Dutch courage. I mean, how many people REALLY trust the Government, quite literally with their lives? Personally I don't give a damn what Blair of Hewett say. The government appear to be doing everything they can, but in reality doing sod all, why are we not being given the jabs to protect us now?
Surely giving us protection when this deadly infection reach our shores is a little like shutting the stable door when the horse has bolted!
