. . . . So when riding a bike on a two lane wide narrow road, with traffic going in opposite directions, which way would you ride? Going with the traffic, or going against the traffic?

Today, this guy was riding his bike against the flow of traffic, causing drivers of cars to almost have accidents! Idiot! :-2

Maybe the narrow saddle was pinching the blood supply to his brain.

Reminds me of one time I was riding over a very busy mountain pass in Los Angeles. Traffic there is crazy. I got off my bicycle, walked it over the other side of the road against traffic. Stayed just off the road and walked it up.

Funny thing is I get to the top of the hill and the road becomes four lanes. I jump on the bike riding down the road passing cars.

Often thought about doing the trip in reverse. Riding up the four lane road and riding down the other side. Would have been fun but I am no Dare Devil.

I rode a bike exclusively for 8 years. It was much faster in the big city, especially Phoenix which is as flat as a billiards table, to get anywhere, since the sidewalks were massive, everywhere, and traffic was awful. I always rode with traffic!

When you are riding with traffic, people's habit patterns and sightlines are working for you. When you go against traffic, you are blindsiding drivers right and left. That said, even riding with traffic, you have to have your head on a swivel, and watch the faces of the drivers, especially at intersections. You may be right at the corner, almost n the crosswalk, but when the light changes green, some drivers with their heads up and locked will still try to turn right no matter what. I would usually make a motion to enter the crosswalk but not actually enter it until the driver turning right had seen me and stopped.

Even as cautious as I was, I still ended up on the hood of a Porsche when that driver decided to suddenly enter a driveway while I was crossing it on the sidewalk! (Hey, I did get a new bike and a ton of groceries out of that deal, though!)

Your suppose to go with the flow of traffic not against with on coming vehicles.

I may be wrong - I thought it was law?

Well, when I ride, I pretty much avoid going anywhere that I have to share major roads with cars. I ride through alleyways, walkways, dirt trails, through neighborhoods, whatever I can do.

I will spend days riding around to find all the back ways to get somewhere.

If I have to get out on the highway, I definitely ride with traffic. That is the law, Patsy, but, of course, there are always dolts who think they know better.

It is - unless it's in a designated cycle area signposted as being contra-directional.

Quite frequently, on the way into work I see a cyclist merrily pootling his way along the hard shoulder between J8 & J7 of the M27, presumably on his way to work. To be fair he keeps well & truly to the near side & doesn't cause anyone any problems, but he'll be for the high jump if / when the Police catch up with him.

I encountered this nightmare last night: It was dark on a busy 4 lane highway. A man in dark clothing, no lights or markers on his bike riding on the right side of the highway towards the oncoming traffic. Insane!

Ive always been told to walk against traffic if no footpath is available. But its also illegal to ride a bike at night without all the safety gear and lights and bells .

Maybe some people have a death wish.

I always told my boys to ride against the traffic on our main highway. And to walk their bikes across the bridge on the way to school.
