It would have made it the most famous science research vessel on the planet doing a great deal to generate interest in science. Why ask the public if they are just going to ignore them.

I agree, I think they ought to have done it. Turning the name down was short-sighted and a wasted once-in-a-lifetime chance to keep the ship famous for its entire life.
