If my kids were told to trace Greek Gospels praising that Jesus guy, I would be equally PO'd.

Of all the potential things written in such script, did it have to be something offensive to so many people? Nobody saw complaints coming?

I think kids should trace different alphabets or other written languages. It is a good thing.

And if they'd been studying China and used a saying of Confucius for their calligraphy lesson there would have been the same outburst I suppose?

There is a fashion over here for tattoos, lots have Chinese characters or Celtic designs, the meaning is irrelevant, the attraction is the aesthetic of the shapes. Some find out later that the chosen design is off of a Chinese menu.

This was a lesson concerning Islamic calligraphy and the aesthetics involved, next week the lesson might be about Buddhist or Hindu designs or renaissance art

Why do some people choose to be offended by learning ?

That had no business in a classroom aside from a reference to Muslim belief any more than the phrase Jesus is our lord and savior should be used other than as reference to

Actually, Calligraphy has nothing at all to do with the language or the content of the writing. It's the decorative way in which it is done. A friend of mine had their family tree written out for them in beautiful calligraphy. There was no mention of any God in that whatsoever.

They're being taught to use latin letters and arabic numerals perhaps mathematics should be banned in case they corrupt the yoof of america, I mean how can muslim maths be better than christian. Have you ever tried doing high level maths in Roman numerals - even multiply and divide are a real pain.

No zero and no positional multipliers make for a hard life.

I find it bad enough when the BBC insist on putting the production year of a programme in Roman Numerals. I swear they do it to confuse you so you can't see how old that repeat really is.

That has been tradition among film producers for decades. Not just the BBC.

I am sure there was some logic to it when they started.

Why not take your calligraphy lesson from an AlgebraAlgebra text

rather than a religious proclamation of faith?

Better yet a cook book.

I love a lot of Religiously inspired music, but it doesn't make me Religious.

I recognise the artistic beauty of the calligraphic hand without even understanding the meaning of the letters. As has already been mentioned, when people have tattos of Oriental writings (a stupid idea, in my poinion, but that's neither here nor there), they only have the tattoo artist's word for it that it s what they think it says. For all they know it could be Mandarin for "I Am A Complete Tosspot For Getting A Lifelong Scar Like This".

Me too, the beauty. However, this was done in a school, therefore understanding the meaning of what the student is doing should be incorporated into the lesson. The meaning violates our current laws & customs & should offend ANYONE who wants separation of church & state.

You might not like it but europeans adopted arabic numerals from the middle east.

Anne pegged it. The schools get an "A+" for trying to teach children to be tolerant, andinclusive...and they get an "F" for not having the common sense to use a phrase that is not inflammatory or volatile.

The children are totally oblivious of any problem, they are happily trying to copy the pretty scripts, totally tolerant,fully inclusive.

It is the 'learned' sophisticated parents with their cultural and religious bias.....jumping up and down because they are offended.............at the same time teaching their children to be just as easily offended.....(brainwashing or indoctrinating them)

I am sure that people can be far too clever, too educated.

It a parents job to guide/protect their children. It is not the job of the local school to undermine the parent. It is not the schools job to promote any particular religion/pholosipy.

Teach about different religions/philosophy, YES. Tricking a child who may already know better to write something totally offensive to what he/she has been taught is dispicable.

Good. IMO, you don't have one. Religion has no place in public schools, which are, at the core, government institutions whose job it is to separate church & state. Colleges are a different story, even public ones.

Historically the church and state overlapped. Each was part of the other Bart Ehrman.d I would agree the church should tread lightly on religious topics. When students as me about say evolution I simply explained the two major approaches and suggested they speak to their parents for guidance. The schools job is to educate and religion has played a part in human history. Please no proselytizing/. That has no place in any public school system. I have a very dim view of "Christian schools".
