A Ban on Guns?

and maybe I got to carried away with what he had done but in my eyes if he was trapping them in the first place why would you carry a gun knowing you would probably kill some one with it?

Because he's a demented nasty old man who wanted to kill anyone at all that he could catch, for what he saw as premeditated revenge. I think the appeal court should have moved him on to Broadmoor, given their view of his mental state, and that he should still be in there - if you read what he's being saying since he got out he's utterly unaware that he did anything wrong in the slightest.

The thing to bear in mind when you read stories like that is that guilt or innocence is decided by a JURY of his peers. It's not some judge sitting in an isolated ivory tower deciding who is guilty or not guilty. The idea of a jury is that being able to relate to the circumstances of the accused and defendant they are in a better position to assess the motives of the perpetrators and decide the true guilt or innocence. The press like to hype things up and create a climate of fear but the reality is very different.

http://www.cps.gov.uk/news/pressrelease ... 06_05.html

"On an informal trawl the CPS has only been able to find 11 cases in the last 15 years where people have been prosecuted for attacking intruders into houses, commercial premises or private land. Only 7 of these appear to have resulted from domestic household burglaries."

One man lay in wait for a burglar on commercial premises, caught him, tied him up, beat him, threw him into a pit and set fire to him. One caught trespassers on private land and shot a boy in the back with 40 shotgun pellets as he ran away. Others shot burglars in the back as they were escaping. Another appears to have been a drug dealer involved in a knife fight on private premises.

It's a peculiarly American problem and seems to be a cultural one. Good luck solving it.

Apparently not.

Farmer Tony Martin, who was jailed after a fatal shooting in 1999, has been arrested on suspicion of illegal firearm possession, the BBC understands. Police said a man, 71, was in custody after his arrest on Thursday morning in the Wisbech area of Cambridgeshire. Officers are searching a property in Norfolk.

I do disapprove of the police trumpeting an arrest on suspicion like this though. If they don't actually find an illegal shotgun they'll have caused a lot of damage for no good reason. The story should only become news when and if he's convicted and not before.

Regardless of which, I still think he should have been in the next ward to Peter Sutcliffe for the last fifteen years.
