I'm sure Ahmed Mohamed stands a far better chance of reaching adulthood unscathed, unarrested and without a criminal record in Qatar than he did in Texas.

Naaaah. Just kidding wit' ya. But seriously, I actually agree with the thread sentiment. New Mexico, a blue liberal state, mostly due to the large Hispanic and Native American populations, mostly despises Texas, ultra conservative Bible-belt state and home of intolerance, ego, and conceit. The poor kid was in as bad of a spot for people of his skin color and religion as you can find in the U.S.
Personally, when I was growing up, you could always spot the Texans on the ski slopes of the Purgatory Ski Area near my home. They were the ones wearing ridiculously expensive and extravagant clothes, cowboy hats (which are ludicrous as ski accessories), skiing across the tops of your skis in the lift lines, and shouting loudly to each other with phrases like "Hey Billy Bob! Where's the darn powderhouse?" and "Hey Jolene! Y'all wait for me an' Jim Boy at the bottom!"
On a side note: New Mexico jokes about Texas I learned in school:
Did you hear about the Texas New Mexico War? The Texans threw dynamite across our border... So we lit it and threw it back!
Then Texans didn't want to spend a lot of money equipping their army to train to fight, so they gave them brooms as guns and rocks as grenades to practice with.
They were told to point the brooms and yell "bang" to simulate shooting and to throw the rocks and yell "Boom!" to simulate grenades.
They were all wiped out by a lone New Mexican who rode through their ranks on a bicycle shouting "Tank-a-tank-a-tank!"
Why do Texans keep their high school diplomas on their dashboards?
So they can park in handicapped spaces!
Why are there so many unsolved murders in Texas?
Everyone has the same DNA.
What happens when a blonde New Mexican moves to Texas?
Both states get smarter!
Why didn't the Texas Water Polo team qualify for the olympics?
All their horses drowned.
And my favorite: What do Texans use for birth control?
Their personalities.

You have to admire anyone that could lower the tone further than that title.

Kid, radio shack level genius.
Great, an unfortunate incident and he becomes the focus of some cause.
I really don't understand those who exploit a 14 year old for some political gain.
Send him to Qatatr, good luck.
Maybe along the way drop by Sudan to hang out with his new buddy Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, a lot to learn there.

I was looking for something else and just came across this.
New Mexico’s School-to-Prison Pipeline
New Mexico’s youth are the solution- not the problem.
Let’s create a better atmosphere for our children and youth, and build a better future for New Mexico. Child well-being in New Mexico is at the bottom of the barrel nationally, and many of our students are being funneled directly from schools into the prison system. Together we can improve educational outcomes across New Mexico, close the school-to-prison pipeline, and build a better future for our communities.
SWOP
I realize this is a blog and don't know how much to take seriously but, gooogle zero tolerance NM.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster, certainly on a personal level for that poor kid. Our authorities are just as stupid here, so take heart!

The kid copied how to make a pencil case clock from Utube. That's hardly genius level.

The laudable aspect is more the desire to engage with the teacher beyond the core curriculum. It says "I have sufficient self-motivation to get this far, encourage me to persist". Any good teacher would place moments like that among the highlights of the term. It distinguishes the good teachers from my time at school from those to whom their work was a job rather than a calling, I can think of at least five at my secondary school who reacted well to unplanned off-topic explorations.

American escapes from police state
It wasn't the science teacher who became frightened. It was another teacher who didn't understand & was following school policies. It was the press after the event who touted the kid as a genius. Just stating the facts, sir.

Your press isn't a body whose behavior carries any significance whatever, I'd get more information from watching raindrops on a window. If the American press drove the direction the story took then shame on the viewing public, that's all I can say.

Agreed, good sir. Especially around major elections I switch over to BBC.
