Yorkshire Ripper

Post by Bothwell »

Some twenty years after Peter Sutcliffe was caught for the murder of 14 (I think but Google will get you the actual number) prostitutes in the north of England a man has been arrested for sending hoax letter and tapes to the police.

This man who was dubbed "Wearside" Jack because of his accent fooled the then chief of the investigation, so much so that even though Sutcliffe was interviewed several times and fitted the collected evidence profile (correct job, similar description, known kerb crawler, £5 note traced back to him etc) cop in charge discounted it because he believed the hoax.

Eventually the cop was replaced and quietly retired and they ripper was caught by a couple of unifromed cops who thought he was acting suspiciosly in a red light area.

I suspect this guy will get the longest ever sentence handed out for peverting the course of justice

I hope they throw the book at him. There was some shoddy police work there, certainly, but how sick would you have to be to do something like this? Sheesh.

fascinating stuff....Ripper hoax police search house

Police search a house as they continue to question a man held over hoax letters and a tape which misled detectives hunting the Yorkshire Ripper.
