To change the subject completely, does anybody know why people have to smash glass bottles on pathways, so that people walking dogs endanger their poor animals ? My hubby had to return home to fetch a dustpan, brush and heavy duty plastic bag so he could remove the danger. It was on a cut-through pedestrian only tarmac path, so local council workers would not necessarily go down there and see the mess to clear it up. I really despair of some people who have no thought for others, or consider the consequences of their stupid actions. :-5 :yh_angry

What I really want to know, though, is what the hell motivates them to do such stupid things ? Why do they have this compulsion for destruction ? Why do they feel they have to destroy ? What is the attraction for smashing glass bottles ?

I suppose it's the smashing that gives a kick - same as putting a brick through a window. It's not even necssarily a malevolent thing. Even when a building is abandoned, with all its doors left open, it won't be long before all its windows are smashed. There is just something that is attractive about smashing glass. Think about it - even when you chuck your bottle & jars into the Bottle Bank, don't you feel some element of satisfaction when you hear it smash against all the other bottles & jars?

Mind you, fewer & fewer bottles these days are being made out of glass. I know the value Spirits at Tesco are sold in plastic bottles, and the Peanut Butter (as well as other products) is now being sold in plastic jars and, so long as the plastic is recyclable, why not?

Maybe I'm weird (?!) but I hate the sound of glass breaking. When I'm doing my recyclables I'm very careful to lay the glass bottles and jars into the container. Speaking of recycling, why are the glass beer bottles worth so much less than the cans or plastic? Anybody know?

I wasn't aware that they were. If they are, perhaps it's because of the extra manufacturing costs. Not only the manufacturing, but the shipping & transportation costs. For instance, a glass 500ml Coke bottle would probably weigh pretty much the same as the contents & would therefore double the transport costs alone, whereas one person could probably lift up enough empty plastic bottles required for a full lorry load.

That makes good sense!

When I take my recyclables, most of which are my daughter's & SIL's who live next door, their beer bottles weigh a ton and take up lots of space and are worth nothing, compared to the plastic water bottles and cans. They say the beer tastes much better out of the glass bottles.

I think I do, yes. They are desperate to have an impact on others, that being the only way they can feel “important, so to speak. They are probably young (or inconsequential souls) and see themselves at the bottom of the social ring – being told what to do by EVERYONE else. Graffiti is pretty much the same thing but they are striking back at the whole community, rather than individual citizens, those who the culprit imagines are “privileged.

In some parts of Germany they hold bottle-smashing events for the benefit of the young (mostly) to release their tension: A brick wall and a heap of bottles, free of charge. In the U.S. (I'm told) they have a car smashing extravaganza – issuing a sledge hammer and a motorcar from the knacker's. They pay a fee I believe. In Sweden, we punish the contents of a bottle of booze (leaving the bottle itself standing and undamaged) then leave our car (washed, waxed and buffed - doors locked) in a parking lot, then jump in front of a speeding train. The Germans and Americans are way ahead of us in social psychology.

IF I CHOOSE TO (anon)

Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play on the computer,

until 4 AM, or sleep until noon?

I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50s, 60s & 70s,

and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will.

I will walk the beach, in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body,

and will dive into the waves, with abandon, if I choose to,

despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful.

But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten.

And, eventually, I remember the important things.

Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken.

How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers,

or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car?

But broken hearts are what give us strength, and understanding, and compassion.

A heart never broken, is pristine, and sterile,

and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning white,

and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face.

So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive.

You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore.

I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free.

I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever,

but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting

what could have been, or worrying about what will be.

And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

:p  ;)

Strange. When I linked it the first time it was fine, but now when I click on the link (the imbedded one I first provided) it comes up "This video been removed by user". But the link I sent this time (not imbedded) seems OK.

I only temporarily changed the “sub-thread because I took another road and I didn't know if you'd take offence at the sliding wind and fog. Anyways, I know'd you'd forgive me.

Of course I would forgive you ! Because, although we all know that a dog usually does that when it has worms, it complimented your post so amusingly - how could anybody take offence ? The number of times I've experienced that as well (the ringtone that is, not the dog with worms). It really is infuriating, especially when the audience are specifically requested to turn off their mobiles before the performance, or at least to put them on silent.

I wonder if the establishment concerned could demand that anyone entering with a phone gives the number to a person in charge of a database, as a condition of entry, then shortly before the concert/snooker/chess begins, all the phone numbers entered on the database are rung simultaneously, and anyone answering is then expelled by security? Obviously they would have to display warnings in prominent places to switch off all mobiles during the event, or face expulsion, to be fair.

That might make people less careless.

I like that idea. Though it seems there should be a way to send a signal at the door that tells the phone to power itself off.

Also a pretty good idea. If they had to leave the "auditorium" to actually receive a signal, job done!

Should this also include "earpiece" commentaries, such as snooker, or the Mosconi world pool championship? Sometimes players have complained that the commentary is audible to them! This could have connotations for unfair advantage. I remember in THIS world championship (snooker) Barry Hawkins looking at the table, wondering how to play the next shot, and John Virgo in the commentary box suggesting various shots he might try. It may have been wild coincidence, but every time John Virgo suggested something, Barry Hawkins either pursed his lips, or shook his head. Could he hear this commentary?

Or simply a bleep to signify that the phone is, in fact, switched "on". An immediate stern look by the ticket-taker might then do the job.

Some countries have theatres which block mobile phones for that very reason, although other countries, such sa UK & USA have ruled such blocking equipment illegal.

I feel very tired so I think I'll just post one or two photos of recent day trips to North Norfolk that we took at the end of May and about a week ago.....................The first pic is Wells-next-the-Sea, a favourite destination for us. You'll find that if you left click the thumbnails, the picture will enlarge.

All the photos are in Wells.

The second photo is our favourite eatery on the quayside, run by a lovely lady called Kay (she's been running that café for at over 50 years !). The bacon and egg rolls are to die for !!!! The third photo is looking back towards the quay, my two fellas and our lovely dog Jessica having walked through the pine woods and along the beach, now heading back to the quay along the mile long sea defence wall. These were taken during the trip in late May.

These next photos were taken just over a week ago also at Wells. The first one is of the boats that take engineers out to the wind generators, for regular maintenance purposes, that have been installed off the North Norfolk coast. The outer harbour was specially constructed for this purpose and there is a permanent dredger systematically dredging the navigable 'run' which of course helps the inner harbour visitors as well. The second photo is the veteran RNLI lifeboat the Lucy Lavers which was busy off the N. Norfolk coast for several decades, retired then restored. It is moored at the Wells quay, having just returned from her trip over to Dunkirk for the 75th annual sailing to France of surviving Dunkirk Little Ships - a remarkable vessel with a fascinating history. The third photo is Jessica satisfying her thirst at the 'Dogs' Hydration Bar' - there's a chalked notice on that 'V' board which asks dogs to 'Please Drink Responsibly' :wah:

The Friendly Café - Open for chinwaggin'

I love Norfolk too. Have spent many happy weeks/months there. An interesting botanical region, with quite a few rare species of wildflowers and insects. I once found Burnt Orchids along the grassy margins near a wood. It's rare and declining in the UK, possibly due to pesticides, land-use/habitat changes and possibly climate change. Couldn't find them this year though. Hope they haven't been wiped out!
