Yesterday, my hubby and my son went to a funeral down in the city of Cambridge, The weather was dreadful - torrential rain all the way to the outskirts of Cambridge. The day went well enough considering it was a funeral and the journey back home was horrendous ! It took over 1 hour to actually get out of Cambridge ! If anybody has the opportunity to go to Cambridge............Don't go !!! Unless it is essential.
In the finish it took nearly 3 hours to get back home - they arrived at about 8.30 pm having driven most of the journey in a queue of large lorries and being overtaken by stupid idiots travelling at over 100 mph on wet roads, kicking up great clouds of spray as they went tearing along ! Why do so many people want to drive so fast to their own funerals?
My hubby went to another funeral today, but this time it was in our own city, so not nearly so much travelling. Also the sun was shining all day ! :-6

That is terrible Gilly. Come and live with us here. Our cemetery is only 15 km from our house and very little traffic on the road. The cemetery is extremely popular too.
People are dying to get in there. I would recommend it to anyone.
Last week a car was stolen parked at the cemetery. The thief's excuse was 'I thought the owner had died and doesn't need the car anymore'.
What a cheeky bugger.

You can always tell when you are having a bad day. It may run something like this .......
You've just ridden your Harley Davidson to your best mate's funeral. When you return to your bike, you find it has been stolen and a knackered Honda C90 left in it's place ! Realising that you will now be late to the doctor's, you start up the C90 and thrash off down the road as fast as it will go, whereupon you get seen by the local law who stop you and give you a speeding ticket ! Now, even later for your appointment, you finally arrive at the doctor's. The doctor pops out and ushers you into his office quickly and says, "I'm so sorry, I have some bad news for you. You have a rare tropical disease and will need to take one of these once a day for the rest of your life ." He gives you 5 huge pills. You reply to the doctor, "I'll never be able to swallow these !" to which the doctor replies "You are not supposed to swallow them !"
You decide you've had quite enough and high-tail it out of the surgery, back to the C90 and head off home. Arriving home you find your house has been gutted by fire and almost all of your possessions have been destroyed. However, a neighbour has managed to save a few things amongst which is some mail - an over-drawn letter from your bank, a tax demand from the Inland Revenue, and a letter from your girlfriend saying it's all over. Your neighbour also found a letter from a competition company announcing that you are a prize winner, and have won a set of clothes pegs, each bearing the head of a famous racing pope !

Reading through various threads today, I was reminded of something that happened to us many years ago..............
We used to have a telephone (landline) number which was the same as a sectional building manufacturers, except the area code was different. We used to receive quite a few calls meant for this company, Vic Hallam, and as you can imagine, it became rather irritating. It seemed that although the postal address for this company was Nottingham, the telephone exchange code number was for Langley Mill, not Nottingham and that was why we used to get these unwanted calls ! :-5
The phone rang and my son decided that he would answer it instead of me, and yes it was somebody wanting to speak to Mr. Vic Hallam. My son told him that he could not, and the caller asked why not? My son replied "Because you've been very naughty !" and put the phone down ! I'm afraid I just collapsed into my chair, roaring with laughter, my imagination running riot at the possible reaction on the other end of the phone ! :yh_rotfl
Strangely, there were very few calls for Vic Hallam after that one ! I understand that the company has been out of business now for several years. In their day they were a very successful sectional building manufacturers and made numerous school 'temporary' buildings, which are still being used today !

I don't know what a Greta Garbo is, but before the automation of garbage trucks there were garbos running behind the garbage collecting trucks, emptying the street bins into it.
'Garbos', as in garbage collectors.
Don't misunderstand me though, I'm not saying Greta is one of them.

It's a lovely sunny day today, but rather chilly and definitely warm coat weather. My hubby took our dog Jessica for a good walk this morning and put her harness on - I always think that is kinder to a dog than having a collar round it's neck. Besides, when Chris lets the dog off the lead, she promptly gets her mouth around the front part of the harness and takes herself for a walk and run, much to the amusement of any people around. She is not trying to remove the harness, it is just something that she does ! She is such a character and an absolute delight to have around - she tries to talk and always makes it obvious what she is trying to say in light woofs or what we call woo woos (a sort of expressionfull mini howl :wah: ). If you ask her a question like 'would you like a treat?' her 'yes' is one gentle woof sort of under her breath !

Can somebody tell me why so many young people want to spend so much money just to have it thrown into the gutter or down the pan ? In other words what the heck is the attraction for these young people to get uncontrollably drunk on Friday and Saturday nights. Wake up the following day at some time in the afternoon with the mother and father of all headaches and feeling nauseous. Why ? Are they all on a self-destruct mission ? Do they really honestly enjoy looking so idiotic in public, unable to walk upright by themselves ? Do they really enjoy the feeling of having no control over their bodies or their mouths, or their fists or their bodily functions ? Why? .................... Do they not appreciate moderation in all things ?
Well the government have banned smoking in public places and now pushing for banning smoking in the open air  They are pushing for no labels on cigarette packets because they believe that the attractive colouring on these packets encourage youngsters to smoke (what !!!!!! ). All this banning of cigarettes is all well and good BUT in my opinion is not nearly as anti-social as alcoholic over-indulgence. I really cannot remember seeing somebody thumping hell out of some innocent other because the 'somebody' has smoked too many cigarettes that day, but I have seen somebody who has drunk too much alcohol nearly beat to death some poor sod who happened to accidentally nudge the drunkard as he was walking past.
The world is going mad !
Our local newspaper reported that in our local magistrates court, a man was fined £650 with £150 costs and £20 'victims surcharge' (whatever that is ) for dropping a nub end of a spent cigarette into the gutter at the side of the pavement. In the same local newspaper another report was about a man who was charged with drink driving and being measured at over twice the legal limit of alcohol - he was fined £150 with £50 costs and £15 'victims surcharge' and had 3 points added to his driving licence (if there are 12 points in total then there is an automatic driving ban in the UK).
Now I'm not sure what you think about this, but I think that drink-driving is just a teensy weensy bit more serious than dropping a spent cigarette end on the public highway ! Madness ! Justice ? Chuffin' rubbish !
What this says is that you won't be done too badly if you drive with 8 pints of beer in your body, BUT woe betide you if you drop a cigarette end or a sweety paper on the pavement ! MADNESS !
:mad::mad:

Whilst I generally agree with what you're saying, there is also the underlying problem of the idea of putting a ban on alcohol. Consider what Prohibition did in America. It resulted in a higher rate of drinking & alcoholism than ever before, simply because it was Forbidden Fruit.
It does come across, at first, that enforcing blank labelling on cigarette packets is a bit petty & nothing but beaurocracy, but the fact is that studies of other countries which have done it demonstrate a definite decrease in smoking because of it. Mind you, ironically, the biggest beneficiaries of the bans on tobacco advertising are the tobacco companies themselves as it means that they don't have to fork out for the massive advertising budget just to keep up with the competition any more, as their competition aren't allowed to advertise either. Therefore, blank packets will benefit them even more, as these will be cheaper to print.
I think what has been the biggest influence on the decrease in smokers has been a combination of increased taxes (now something like £8 / pack of 20, I think), banning of smoking in all enclosed / semi enclosed public places (even bus shelters, for all the notice anyone takes of it), but most of all making it Socially Unacceptable. In the past, the biggest cause of people taking up smokin in the first place has been from peer pressure at school, with it being 'cool' to smoke. These days it's the total opposite.
There are also similarities as to the question of the legislation of Cannabis. I can see all sides of the arguments for & against. I agree that whether it's legal or not there are those that will still use it. There are also those that will smoke it simply because it's illegal. I know it's a pacifier, whereas alcohol is a stimulant, often causing aggressive behaviour. However, there are also the questions of whether or not it will encourage people to start using drugs, leading on to harder ones & consequently, addictions to Class A drugs. Whether an initial Novelty Value of legislation could be the first rung of the ladder. Whether it would increase the incidences of Driving Under the Influence or not.
One thing is for sure, when something is illegal, its price on the Black Market goes to that of Premium Rate.
There is the controversial question also as to whether those who end up in A&E due to self administered injuries / those caused by alcohol abuse should have to pay for their treatment or not. The main argument against is that the NHS should always be Free at the Point of Use. Whle I agree with this, once again I can see the opposing arguments. Perhaps the solution would be to impose additional fees to the local Night Clubs to be paid directly to the NHS. This, of course, would result in the the additional costs being passed on to that of the alcohol, which 'may' result in a reduction of its usage.

All my life I have loved bright coloured clothing. I feel that so many people wear pastel shades and other dark colours and I think life should be brightened up if only by wearing bright colours - yellow is probably my favourite (it's a sunny cheerful colour), followed fairly closely by lilac, which I think is a very pretty colour. :-6
I can remember, with a chuckle, when I was first going out with my hubby in my teens, I wore my new dress to the weekly dance (in those days they had a big band, live, like Glen Miller type of band). My dress was orange with white polka dots all over it (yes I know, it's difficult to imagine these days  :wah: ), but it actually looked quite good on me ! To my amusement there was another girl with a similar orange dress (she must have patronised the same shop as me ! :wah: ). Gawd you should have seen the look she gave me !!!! When Chris noticed he started to snigger and I just cracked up laughing - mostly at the scowling look she kept giving me ! I could never understand why some people were mortified if another had a similar dress on ! :yh_rotfl

My hubby, Chris, has just discovered the writer Jilly Cooper, and is deep into her book "Class ". From time to time I am made to jump by a sudden guffaw of laughter coming from Chris's armchair area ! Apparently the book is a Jilly Cooper slant on Aristocracy and the Upper Middle Class etc. of the UK. It seems that Jilly Cooper was born into the 'Upper Middle Class' so I would imagine she would know quite a lot about it. My hubby has decided that Jilly Cooper has a definite raciness about her writing, and has a wicked sense of humour. One thing is for certain, Jilly Cooper has another fan !

The forecast predicted good weather for last Saturday and not so good Sunday, so we decided to go to the North Norfolk coast on Saturday. We got up early and packed lunch, packed the food that we would need for the dog during the day and off we went.
What an enjoyable day it was, visiting our old friend Wells-next-the-Sea, and although the breeze was a little on the chilly side The fellas got a decent walk in and took the dog to the pinewoods next to the sandy beach and gave her a jolly good run. Jessica, our dog, was in heaven and just ran everywhere. She was ready for a nice long cool drink of water when she returned to our car on the quayside. There were quite a lot of people about, it being Saturday, as all the day trippers came out to enjoy the sun by the seaside. :-6
The journey took us approximately 3 hours there and 3 hours back and we were able to spend about 6 hours wandering around Wells and drinking in the lovely clean sea air. Nice battery charger !

Not sure if I should suggest 'Riders' as his next read of hers. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the following books, Rivals and Polo. I tried more of her more recent ones too but they weren't as good.

This is the last 16 of the teams. Apparently when they play the second leg in the Ukraine, part of the stadium will be closed down because of crowd trouble in the previous match held in the Ukraine. I've just been watching the Saturday evening news on BBC TV. One item concerned a mass of islands north of Australia in the grip of a cyclone. Although the wind has eased somewhat, there have been winds of 200 mph !!!!! I cannot begin to imagine how traumatic that must be. Those poor people. Most houses have been destroyed and there is no knowing how many people have been killed or made homeless ! And we complain about stuff that happens in the UK!!

There are so many islands to rescue, that I fear there are almost bound to be many deaths from disease as well as malnutrition. There are times when I am grateful, despite our dreadful politicians, that I live in the UK.

Seems to me that members here are just not interested in ordinary chatting about anything and everything. Seems they have to be led by a thread title ! Oh well, I'll give it a few more days then, it there is still little or no interest in this thread, I'll pack it up.

OK what shall we talk about now ?
OK........I just had a short visit from my own Scottish contingent , that is my daughter her son and daughter and their partners.
They were down for their paternal grandfathers funeral, it was literally a flying visit with me making them breakfast at 7.00am this morning so they could get their flight back.
I write this because when I heard they were coming down, I was happy to be able to see them. Then on second thoughts, it was for their other Granddad's funeral......that doesn't make me a bad person.......does it ?

I suppose that's because they live right up there in Scotland, you don't get much of a chance to see them do you ? My sister lives on the Isle of Skye and I'm in Nottinghamshire, as is her son, with one grandchild and her daughter lives in Suffolk with 4 grandchildren, so my sister has to do a lot of forward planning in order to do the rounds of seeing her offspring and her siblings. One of our brothers lives in Chesterfield (used to live in London), and the other one lives in Grantham, Lincs. The next get-together will be my sister's 60th birthday which will be held at a nice pub in Nottingham, as being fairly central to all rellies. It will be in April but her birthday date is in May, however she can't get time off from her full time job, in May to have the 'do' on her actual birthday.
When you've got rellies scattered all over it is very difficult to get everybody together on a particular date.

No I wouldn't think you were a bad person at all ! Maybe a bit naughty and mischievous at times,, but I can't imagine you being bad !

I suppose there have been times (once or maybe twice) when you were a bad lad, but I must confess I've not seen that in FG ! :wah:

A sad day for me as tonight I handed in my official resignation from the choir & returned my music & uniform. This has been brought about by issues with the Assistant Musical Director who doesn't have a clue.
I've been with the choir for over 25 years & where it always used to be the highlight of my week, with this particular idiot out front, it's become an ordeal which, along with some other contributing factors, initiated my going into a real downer last week, resulting in my calling the Samaritans & NHS 111, where I was referred to a Duty Nurse, a Duty G.P., a Duty Psychiatrist, then to an Emergency Appointment the next day with my G.P., who has referred me to the Community Psychiatric Nursing Team & MIND.
After handing in my stuff I went on to another choir in the area, but to be honest, they're not really up to much, so I'm still looking for decent alternatives.

Wishing you well FourPart, and remember the saying "Don't let the buggers get you down"........that is a saying isn't it ? It has served me well in the stronger version.

FourPart, I'm very sorry to hear that. 25 years and they put a prat in charge ! Was there a choice ? Was it put to the vote, or was it just done ? All that hard work and hours and hours of your time ! Well, good luck with your efforts at finding another choir. But if you do find one and they are not very good, well you get the bit between your teeth and train them up. Then you'll see who is the better choir ! Your old one that is led by that pratt, or your newly found one.
All the best FP and keep your chin up (otherwise you'll be draggin' yer beard on the floor!
) Take care of yourself and as Bruv says "Don't let the buggers grind you down " Cos, you're a lot better than that !

At the moment I'm watching the new tournament - Snooker World Grand Prix final at Llandudno, Wales, between Judd Trump and Ronnie O'Sullivan, and what a tussle it is between these two masters of snooker. Beats flippin' hassle on Forum Garden any day! :wah:

What a horrible week it has been ! Co-pilot seemingly going off the rails and diving a plane loaded with passengers into the Alps, killing everybody on board ! If he wanted to take his own life for some reason, why murder 149 people - total strangers, and innocent. What a terribly selfish action.
Apart from feeling dreadfully sorry for the relatives of all those dead people, I also feel for the parents of that young co-pilot. What they must all be going through is unimaginable. I believe his parents are not living in their house at the moment, and I must say I can't blame them. When people recover slightly from their deep sorrow I'm sure some may become very angry, and they will no doubt feel a great anger towards the parents of the co-pilot, as he is dead and out of it. I hope I am wrong though.
t seems that the co-pilot was not well and the police found a screwed up medical form dated for the day of the flight. Apparently the medics, although they would not say what was wrong with their patient, they did say it was not depression.
What a dreadful tragedy.

And if I understand it, the whole thing would never have happend if the pilot hadn't gone to the loo.

I expect the co-pilot would have found a way to be by himself on the flight deck in some way. It seems he was having a problem with his eyes which, of course would have affected his career as a pilot.
