Silly me didn't even wonder about his Race. I guess we just naturally tend to look at events from our own perspective.

He's the right age range for suicide and hanging has grown in popularity over the last few years as the method used.

The term is 'hanged'.

I can't help wondering why such a big deal was made of such a mundane story.

You think it may be mundane to you because your race may not have a history of being hanged?

But there are young blacks who think its mundane, because they do not know their history, or don't care about the history.

So if we allow young blacks, to be further influenced by some whites who view their history as mundane, then large chunks of our history will be wiped " Clean"; or could I say be " Whitened!"

Yeah, a black man hanging from a tree in Mississippi would only seem mundane to a white man.

I am not saying that White men hung this particular Black man, but I will say that White men have hung hundreds, perhaps thousands of Black men in American history; to some Whites that history is mundane and meaningless, to most Blacks it is not;

but that's just how it is. I don't spend any sleepless nights worrying about how Whites feel about Blacks, or how they feel about hanging them;

I live in a country where I must live with Whites, no matter how they feel about me.

and that's just how it is.

Its absolutely nothing anyone can do about the white men who think like this;

its just how it is.

In my lifetime, in Atlanta, I had to cut a tree down, so no more ropes could be hung on it.

Neither was I. The owner of the tree had it cut, not because men were actually being hanged, but the hangman's loose was continually being hung from the tree; the sheer symbolism that it portrayed, the hurt and anger just the visual caused;

its no different than the comments some White men still make in public; the sheer symbolism that it portrays; the hurt and anger it causes;

and some of these White men don't joke about it; they are serious about how they speak.

...how they really feel about it...

I'm sorry to hear that. Perhaps whites are more chimp and blacks more bonobo. I prefer bonobos as a species, they're much more docile and better lovers.

The opinions from some Whites that they are superior to Blacks in many areas, has never been docile in history.

I didn't think it was mundane. My point was that as a white woman I never considered his race when I first heard the story - in fact, I don't think it was mentioned until later or else I missed that part of the news story. When I came across it in a print article and it registered where this was, I 'got' why it needed to be looked at closely.

My boss hung himself at just over the age of 50. Had everything going for him, you would have thought. But that is what I meant when I said I think we tend to look at events from our own perspectives.

It seems to me that we kill or oppress (when killing is illegal) for three reasons:

1- we feel threatened

2- Jealousy

3- pure rage

I would say in general that many white Americans have shown a propensity for all three regarding blacks as well as other species. And if murdering blacks were still tolerated, many whites would still do it and many others would continue to look the other way. We see that where it can barely be justified as in the overwhelming cases of cops killing blacks that that is exactly what the story is.

And I understood you, my post have focused on the reactions of other posters in your thread. It was a Black man that was hung, I believe his crime was murdering a White woman. He could have hung himself, other blacks or Whites could have hung him. We don't know yet, his crime could have been killing a Black woman; but killing is killing, he was a murderer.

But even the law, allows killers to be killed for killing others. But the law wants to do the killing. And that's just how it is.

Actually, and interestingly, in America, White cops kill white people at a far greater number and percentage than they do blacks. Of the available stats , from participating agencies, cops kill around 400 people a year, around 96 of those killed are Blacks. The most surprising figures to me was the fact that Blacks are killed by White cops, on a yearly average, about 2 times a week, Whites are killed more than that. But of those 2 Blacks a week killed, about 20% of them are under 21. Which is disturbing.

Another thing I found strange, is they kept a stat on Blacks killing Blacks; Blacks have killed over 324,000 of each other, but this stat is from a period of over the last 35 years. They have kept record of this for 35 years. But yet the above stats concerning how many people cops kill a year in America, only goes back a seven year period; and only 750 police agencies participated and submitted their stats, out of 17,000 agencies;

which is more disturbing.

Since when does the U.K. not have a history of hanging? The last hangings took place in my own lifetime (1964), both of whom were white. Mind you, offhand I don't know of any blacks who were hanged.

However, when you refer to hangings, are you, in fact, refering to lynchings? If so we also have a history of that. For instance, during WW2 a lot of Free Polish Air Force pilots got lynched after parachuting from their planes after being mistaken for Germans.

Be it hanging or lynching doesn't really come into this case anyway. As I read the article, it is generally believed to be a suicide, although the media would much rather hype up the suspicion that it might have been a racially motivated murder, despite having no evidence to that effect.

I think that a fundamental difference is that in the UK, the hangings Fourpart speaks of were carried out by the government. only three people have been hanged by the State since 1936.

The difference is far more than fundamental, the numeric's are not even in the same atmosphere; no Blacks were hung there, and the state only hanged 3 since 1936; that does not even come close to comparison that Blacks faced in the 1800's and even into the early 1900's , being hanged in America; or lynched by Whites. It was sheer horror, that the government turned a blind eye to. The state kept little record of those murdered.

The UK is totally different, even in the area of cops murdering the citizens; murder itself does not occur in the UK nearly as much as it does in the United States. The gun laws are different, and I think the consciousness of the UK is different when it comes to killing.

That was the point I was making. All of the hangings since 1936 in the US, except for those three were Lynchings.

I knew of three in Cobb County Georgia in the late 60s. God knows how many were done in the rest of the South. They usually didn't make the papers.

Cobb County was where I cut the tree for the man who wanted it removed to keep them from putting the hang loose in it. And that was in 1999.

That says a lot for our system of Police not being routinely armed. Over here, if just one person gets shot by an armed Officer, it results in a major National Enquiry.

As to State controlled hangings (I presume 'State' refers to 'United' States), there is also the questionable act of the hanging of Sadaam Hussein. Of course, it could be said that the sentence was carried out by the Iraqi Government, but the question has to be who was in control of the Iraqi Government at the time?

Yes; he tried cutting the ropes but they kept putting the loose's back up. The tree was right near 5 college campuses. Right where everyone could see it. All 5 were black colleges.

In the days of segregation, Blacks were not allowed to attend college with White students.

Many colleges were opened specifically to educate Black.

Some were State funded, such as Florida A&M (Agricultural and Mechanical. I suppose that it is not difficult to see what the focus if such a university might have been)

Others were founded by well-meaning Whites who wished to help Blacks attain a comparable education, and other were founded by successful Blacks who, likewise, wished to see educational opportunities for Black equal to the high quality white institutions.

Most of these Black universities remained primarily black for decades after segregation was finally broken.

Many have become great education institutions.

This is a good explanation of what a " Black College" is. And yes, the nooses were symbolic of " Lynching"; the symbolism of just " Seeing the noose hanging there by itself" was enough to invoke the terror of the past. So actually finding a black man hanging from a noose now, in this time, invokes that terror again.

Most of the hangings were done by " The Klu Klux Klan", a White Supremist organization which still exist. They feel Whites are innately superior to blacks , and never wanted slavery to end.

So even now, as I examine some threads, and some views from some whites here, or anywhere, often I can still see the residue of that symbolism, just coming out of the White person in their written expressed words. That superior attitude, and its degrading nature.
