Conflict Of Interest? Bullying? Or Both?

Post by Ahso! »

My guess would be both. Republicans love to bully and they love their donors more than the voters at large.

Those republicans hate big government unless they can use it to pacify their donors while simultaneously bullying local officials who actually work for the constituents. Does Harris believe only dems want marijuana reform?

News from The Associated Press

"We provide half a billion dollars (annually) to the District. One would think they would be much more compliant with the wishes of Congress," Rep. Andy Harris, a Maryland Republican and one of the most vocal pot opponents, said in an interview Thursday.

Actually, the District received more than $670 million in federal funding last year to support its $11 billion budget. The federal money is earmarked for specific programs - including the city's court system.

Republicans will "find some areas where perhaps we have been very generous with the citizens of the District. That will all come with time," Harris warned.

Then there's that conflict of interest.

Shortly after his success in blocking the District voters' will, several media outlets revealed a serious conflict of interest involved in his stance on marijuana reform. It came to light that Harris' third largest campaign donor is the pharmaceutical corporation Emergent BioSolutions, based in Rockville, Maryland. One of Emergent's products is epsil, "a fast-acting treatment that reduces the pain associated with oral mucositis," which is a common complication of chemotherapy from cancer treatment. Marijuana has been recognized formally in a number of states as having immense therapeutic potential for cancer patients. In fact, in states where medical marijuana has legalized, the number of pharmaceutical pain killers prescribed has dropped significantly. The congressman has not explicitly addressed this issue, but it is now clear Harris has not disclosed an important conflict of interest surrounding his recent activity against marijuana reform.[33]
