Getting back towards the original point of the post - as we're all aware, Oscar & I were poles apart when it came to our politics & much as I loathe them, I respect & support her right to follow them. However, when not talking politics she could make some extremely interesting posts upon which we had a great deal in common. Now, if I were to have put her on ignore because of her extremist political views, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the posts she made on other matters either.

That is certainly true. But what if the views you were at odds with were not political but personal, agressive and/or slanderous sort? Would you feel the same way about risking missing the fluffy ones?

Closing your eyes to events doesn't make those events go away. That's just the ostrich syndrome.
To Oscar's credit she kept the attacks, on the whole, to the relevant threads - although some threads did get regularly hijacked, but they remained out of the other threads.

To use your metaphor, a ban might be used to remove the undesirable drunkard from the street. To ignore him is to just pretend the problem doesn't exist.

Well yes, but a BAN is for the benefit of the whole forum, as perceived by admin of course. IGNORE is an independent benefit, as perceived by the individual, naturally.
I agree with you 100% that differences in political opinion or motivation is much too a minor thing to put someone on “ignore, especially when that person is appreciated on other subjects ¦ as you say. We are all human beings and have 'coping mechanisms' (not the sort of language I use too often) so if it is good for you......go for it.
To be honest, people have wound me up online, as you say these people are virtual strangers. I always remember what my Father used to say when one of my 2 elder brothers wound me up, and that was to ignore them, they win when you react, you win when you can brush it aside.
