I note the passing of the Reverend Ian Paisley, founder of Northern Ireland’s Free Presbyterian Church and of the Democratic Unionist Party.
His divisive position in public life was not his own, it was an inheritance. Unionist Protestants have said all he said and done all he did for centuries. All that Ian Paisley was responsible for was fronting his generation's intransigence. Others did it before him, others will do it now in his place.
Northern Irish Unionism is both a disease and a disgrace but nobody can blame the Big Man for any of it. Blame his congregation. Blame those of his constituents who marked his name with a cross at each election.

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

If you want to blame anything or anyone blame religion. Same as the middle east the conflict has staggering similarities to the catholic/protyestant religious wars in europe.

He's not any worse than martin mcguinness or gerry adams and at least there was never any suggestion he was involved in terrorist activities.

I found him to be an utter disgrace. A supposed member of the Clergy extremely (very) vocally encouraging Hatred of the "Blasphemous Papists".
It's always the same - whenever anyone of note dies, everyone suddenly comes up to go on about what a good person they were & what a good friend they've lost. Downright hypocrisy.
It's people like him that have impaired any chance of Peace throughout Ireland's history.

You really miss the point don't you. At the end of the day he was a peacemaker - that link I used, which you clearly did not look at, was one to where two former enemies were paying their respects to him. Yes he was a fundamentalist christian and a protestant bigot and so is the pope, except of course he's a catholic bigot not to mention beinga mysogynist who has forgotten all the oppression and warfare that led to the UK being to paraphrase his words, one of the most anti-catholic countries in europe. Modern Britain is a country founded in large part on anti-Catholicism - take the succession, Roman Catholics are barred from becoming head of state or even being married to the head of state.
As to blasphemous papists according to catholics everyone else is a heretic and going to hell. Catholics, muslims, protestants they all preach that if you don't believe as they do you are a heretic and will burn in hell. Personally I think it's all nonsense so you can do your own research as to the belief systems.
I would agree with you about Ian paisley he was a bigot as much a product of his heritage and environment as anything else but he managed to rise above that and make peace with his enemies. What do you think of the IRA men who sat down with him and went in to government with him are they really hypocrites?

I still believe the Peace Process came about despite his actions, not because of them. It was inevitable that sooner or later something was going to have to be done or it would simply continue to escalate. Fortunately it came sooner rather than later (if you can consider a few hundred years as 'sooner').
Hypocrites? To sit down & negotiate - no. That was an essential means to an end. It's the only way any conflict can be settled to an acceptable compromise. But the claims of friendship? That I very much doubt. With a lifetime of hatred being passed down through the generations I just don't believe it possible. An acceptable tolerance is one thing. A lasting friendship within a single lifetime under those circumstances is another thing altogether.
The point is that the leaders of a single generation don't have to like each other to work out a Peace Plan. In fact, they can still hate each others' guts, but so long as it works, what the hell? In fact they could do with something like that in Gaza.
