Today, as every year since 2001, all media is tuned to the ceremonies at Ground Zero. Every name is read, even by children only slightly related to the victim or barely knew or didn't know the victim. It takes about 5 hours.

I feel conflicted, yet feel a bit mad at myself for not wholeheartedly supporting this yearly event. I feel selfish when it cancels my soap at 12:30 pm after starting at 8:30 am.

Does anyone have an opinion? I don't think the ceremony runs continuously, on every channel anywhere else but NY area. Is this so? Will this occur every year, forever?

Should I delete this thread, & never speak of this again?

I know exactly what you mean.

It puts me in mind of an incident in Liverpool some years ago where there reports of an aborted foetus being found in an alleyway, and by the next morning there were the usual floral tributes & teddies from all over the place. It then came to light that the aborted 'foetus' was, in fact, a hamburger, and some politician (or other celeb) got into BIG trouble by commenting that it wasn't really surprising because "Scousers Love Misery".

The point being that despite being in total ignorance of what it's all really about, everyone likes to put on a show of reverence, regardless of how insincere it really is. It's all a charade.

At always strikes me as the same sort of thing over here in the approach to November when on TV panel shows, before the recording of the show actually starts, the stage crew attach the panel with token poppies. To me, I see this as a total insult to the whole concept of the poppies because of it being purely for show & what they believe (probably correctly) the audience want to see - not because of the person's own individual actions.

Even over here, kids may have some inkling about how we wear poppies to remember those in our forces who died in the line of duty, but I wonder how many of them know anything about the origin of the poppy symbol itself.

A Hamburger! Now that's a strange occurrence!

I don't think at all that those participating are not sincere. As well as the names being spoken, pictures, hometown & age are shown on screen. I know what the death of loved ones is like, most people do, and what it means to the person. The way these folks went is horrific, I will certainly never forget & always regret. My question really is, I suppose, should this continue in it's present length every year? Shouldn't the broadcasters know by now it always runs hours overtime & tell the truth about how long it actually is?

To other Americans living elsewhere, can you tell me what goes on in your locations today? We also have neighborhood by neighborhood remembrances, throughout the Tri-State area. Hundreds in my own neighborhood were affected & will be gathering tonight.

What is UK remembering in November, & what does poppy symbol mean?

The end of WW1 ended on the 11th day, of the 11th month at 11am.

Across the muddy wastes of the battlefield there was nothing - all life had been desolated....

....except for some poppies growing in the mud.

A reminder that from the worst of desolation new life will continue.

For this reason, the Royal British Legion put together paper poppies, made from a piece of red crepe paper, pinned to a green plastic stem with a black plastic plug (representing the centre point of the poppy).

These poppies are then 'sold' by volunteers for Donations. The proceeds of which go to the Haig Fund for Military Veterans.

Well, color me ashamed. I guess that's red. For the first time in 12 years, the services actually ended at noon, leaving me, the most important person in the world, able to watch my soap in 30 minutes. I turned it on a few times & yes, I was genuinely moved.

oh wah ta goo sy am (try saying that fast)

Again, I should know that! We used to call it Armistice Day, but now it is called here Veteran's Day & is a Federal Holiday.

Well, I stop and think about the day, and remember how it affected my "universe"

But then I remember how the reaction to it has affected the entire world, and I decide that it is time to move on.

Not much seems to take place here in Colorado. The local news media mentions a couple of people who had relatives that perished, and we have discussions on whether we are now safer than we were then.

Meanwhile the results of our response continue to cause death and destruction around the Middle East.

Yup. Time to move on.

"Yup. Time to move on."

Not here. You'd never know it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Brooklyn/Bedford Park 9/11 Memorial Committee is hosting its annual memorial and candlelight vigil at Bill Brown Park, Avenue X and Bedford Avenue, at 7pm, rain or shine.

State Senator Martin Golden will host two memorials: in Marine Park, at Fillmore Avenue and Marine Parkway, at 6pm, and then at 7:30pm on the American Veterans Memorial Pier at Shore Road and Bay Ridge Avenue.

The September 11 Family Group is holding a ceremony at 9/11 Memorial Square in Asser Levy Park at 4pm. The park is at Ocean Parkway and Surf Avenue, by the Brighton Beach – Coney Island boardwalk.

The Children of Abraham Peace Walk returns to Cobble Hill at 6pm, starting at Congregation Baith Israel Anshei Emes at 236 Kane Street.

At 7pm, Brooklyn Heights’ St. Ann & The Holy Trinity Church are hosting their annual public interfaith memorial service on the Brooklyn Promenade at Montague Street.

Bargemusic will hold a free Memorial Concert at 8pm at Brooklyn Bridge Park, led by violinist Mark Peskanov and featuring music by Bach, Haydn, Schubert, and more. No reserved seating; doors open at 7:30pm.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's just a few, & just in Brooklyn.

Wish someone else would be the target for a change. No. Wish no one was a target anywhere. Living in NYC sure has quite a few DIS advantages, especially, of course, not enough parking. Oh, & high prices & ................. etc.

Well, it was probably THE biggest event in the history of the City with the greatest number of people affected ever. Compare it to the 1910 Earthquake in San Francisco, or the Chicago Fire. Closest modern event in the US might be Hurricane Andrew in Miami, Or Katrina. It does take a while to get over something like that.

Oh, bigger than those, affected our entire nation as well as much of the world. I remember idiots saying at the time (even democrats) "Thank god Al Gore lost. George W. is better for this." Yeah.

13 years. That stays in our memory. The fact was, that I couldn't watch "The Young & the Restless" while my friends in other states could, well--------I need some hobbies & purpose besides that! I love that show so much!! & I love discussing it with friends! Selfish of me, utterly childish. I'm wrong, wrong I tell you! There are worse crimes though, I'm not that bad. ;-)

OY

Sounding like Mrs. Dog.

I asked the Mrs. if it affected her soaps today and if it did [DUH] I wouldn't have to ask.

Her constant complaint is when all network channels feel compelled to simultaneously cover an event which interfere with her viewing pleasure. Could't they coordinate that one channel take care of it?

Good point she has, and I am tired of hearing it.

I know that Memorial / Poppy / Amistice (whatever) Day was initially set up to honour those that died during WW1, but I consider it a way to honour all those that have died in the course of duty. As I see it, this isn't even restricted to the Military. It should be a tribute to such services as Firemen, Ambulance Crews, Police, Lifeboat Crew, Merchant Navy etc. This is an ongoing thing & should be respected as such. If it were still just a matter of honouring those who fell during WW1, then I would agree that it probably is time to set it aside to the annals of History, but it's much more than that.

Yes, here too, which is why the name was changed to 'Veterans Day' to honor all vets & I love your idea of including the Firemen, etc.

No television show has to tell me to remember 9-11 and the victims. I think I speak for most people.

We have a 9/11 memorial every year - a large flag is erected for each & every victim.

attached to each flag is the name of the individual & where they were at the time etc..

I cry every year. I start getting emotional on 9/10.

I'm a big Y&R watcher - have been for years & I'm irritated if my show is interrupted for Tennis or a golf tourney.

But Y&R you can miss for a week and get caught up current quickly - except the children can grow from 3 yrs. old to college in a week...:wah:

I wish the pain of 9/11 moved on as quickly.

You talk of natural disasters which happens at random across the globe.

This was a deliberate attack which reminded me of the Attack on Pearl Harbor

The first attack on the Twin Towers, 1993 World Trade Center bombing wasn't enough to get the attention of the occupant of the White House.

Treated no more important than a robbery at a local bodega.

My parents were no more endangered by the attack on Pearl than I was on the Twins on 9/11.

It was an attack on all of us.

I was referring to how people in New York are dealing with the attacks. Not getting into the politics at all.

Just talking about how people deal with traumatic events in their lives.

There are all kinds of bravery which should be honored

Wasn't until 9/11 ever heard the of "first responder".

That could be a civilian who happens along and sees something and responds, so to speak.

Of course, the bravery of the firefighters, EMT etc. is always honored.

Walking into a situation, knowing somebody out there dedicated to kill you is another thing all together.

Yup, the soldier is special.

I'm so glad to meet yet another watcher. What you say is so true! Summer Newman is 19, yet she was born after 14 year old Cassie died which should make Mariah in her thirties! These writers should enter politics & be speech writers with the whoppers they write that pass for truth!

I'm curious and perhaps a bit sceptical as well. These large flags that are erected: What sort of flags are they?
