I have spent several hours touring Greenock, The Isle of Grain, took a tour around my home town,visited several of my old schools, my brothers home in Hampshire, my daughters in Perthshire, even found the Chinese in Edinburgh that gave my stomach a problem.

It is amazing, isn't it?

How do they do that ?

I love Google Street View. I know that they have cars, I saw one in my neighborhood recently. Drones? I saw an incredible piece last night on 60 Minutes about the popularity of non-military usage of drones.

I belong to a couple of groups on facebook regarding towns/villlages that I've lived in. I posted some old turn of the century photos yesterday, along with hundreds of others and thought then how great it would be to join all these photos together and do a kind of streetview with them

I always visit the places I am actually visiting a few weeks before via street view.

Then I amaze my co travellers with my knowledge of the local area :wah:

I wonder when they do it?

My street looks like early morning, when the sun was quite low but bright....................can't remember that day.

Sometimes Annie you can see the shadow cast from the camera mounted on the car, so it's not a drone.

My daughter lives out of town amongst a group of maybe ten houses, why do they go to places like that?

It can't be to keep us amused, it must cost a fortune.

I am trying to work out the obviously devious reason behind it, there must be some money making reason.

There's bound to be some devious reason, Bruv, as you say it must cost millions to cover all the places they cover with cameras at street level ! One point my son raised about the "google street view" was that would-be burglars could quite easily 'case' a property from the comfort of their own sitting rooms, checking out garden entrances etc, house windows, garden sheds and of course warehouses and offices. Possibilities are endless ! But I am truly fascinated with this Google Street View and have spent hours pouring over familiar towns. I have checked out all my relatives houses too :yh_rotfl

It seems that a lot of the Street Views are around 4 years old, however, they do go round all the time and bring things up-to-date, as I've noticed in my locality there are certain buildings etc. which have only been finished in the last year, so it does vary time wise.

I have found a flaw, trying to get near my old London home station, it wont let you pass up the road, it diverts to the motorway that passes under the station with no way onto the road from that point.And I approached it from two different ways.

Street view is normally from ground level, hence the name.

I could smell the fresh air, but a railway line that crosses the same road within a few hundred yards?

Why are all your roads so boringly straight?

Where is Shopping Mall, I thought all American towns had a Mall.

That IS the town center.

We can drive down to Boulder for the mall and all that sort of stuff.

And if you follow the road north to the traffic light and take a left, you'll find the road becomes a lot less "boringly straight" within a few miles.

I think it looks wonderful Lars....and I find straight roads an easy drive. The landscape reminds me of Arizona.

Where is Shopping Mall, I thought all American towns had a Mall.

Hahahaha! The small towns are the best in my opinion. I live right next to an historic town; and yes it boast of antique shops and quaint dinners and pubs; but no shopping malls in this historic town. The roads are cobblestones and about 8PM you can here the train's whistle as it passes thru.

Bit dry looking, not as green as the UK especially after the winter we have had.

I guess mine is so out of the way they didn't bother with a street view.

When I go there it says street view not available and then the only things I can get is a view from above. I can get a street view on all the local towns, maybe it has to be in a city or town or something.

What browser are you using, on what operating system? Can you get street view in Google? Can't see any reason why the link shouldn't work.

The good old English pub, do you have to wipe your feet on the way out?

Nothing wrong with dropping below Google's radar, I expect you are on their list though.

Chrome on Windows 7.

I've no idea why the links were blank. I used streetview instant to do mine.

The pub ? We still chew corn stalks round here and order the ale in flagons from a buxom wench in an off the shoulder blouse

Very old photo, woolworths is now poundland, the star inn is now empty and the gable end is falling away, currently has scaffold up and the side street is closed off for safety. Peasgoods chemist has gone and is currently an empty shop. The empty shop next to co op is now a charity shop. Currys is now an empty shop, bon marche is gone and is another charity shop, jessops have gone and been replaced by a local photography firm. Lots of changes since those photos were taken, we are full of phone shops and charity shops now.

Sadly the play room went years ago too and it just ran as a pub for many years. Roof was leaking like a basket for years too, the landlords moved into another pub and a temporary manager was put in but refused to live there as he said it wasn't fit for human habitation. It was boarded up and left sometime last year then more recently it was noticed that the gable end was falling away into the side street.

It could be your retirement project??

At £100,000 up front costs with an FRI lease? No way.

It the landlord brought it up to 'good and tenantable condition and repair and fit for the purpose for which they are let’ before trying to dump it on someone then it might be worth looking at but I'd still worry about how long it's been left to rot and how much work would come your way even after it had been signed off as refurbished.

Still, it was a busy pub in its day and could be again if someone was prepared to make a go of it.
