Big business Bad smells

Post by Bruv »

I am getting emails from a righton movement, don't rightly remember how I got on their list......but.....on second thoughts it was the NHS data carry on.

Their latest mail brought this bit of frightening enlightenment.

A billion-dollar showdown is looming in Central America this week as a Calgary-based mining company announced it will sue the country of Costa Rica.

Chile refuses a mining company rights to poison their country.............so the company sues Chile ?

Eli Lilly files $500M NAFTA suit against Canada over drug patents

Canada invalidates drug company patents......so company sues Canada ?

Not on the efficacy of the drug......but on the fact they are a member country of NAFTA

Philip Morris sues Australia over cigarette labels

Australia wants to deter it's citizens from smoking........company sues Australia.

Maybe the Big Boys are getting too big for their boots.

These are the campaigners if anybody is interested SumOfUs

In what court would some company sue Canada? If it was a Canadian court, couldn't the government simply disallow the suit?

Don't ask me.

Why pick on Canada when Chile and Australia were on the list?

There must be ways of legally questioning any countries actions.

In an international law court presumably. Almost every country except the US have signed up to international law.

One company is Canadian the other two are American, claiming for loss of future possible profits harmed by the internal decision of national governments.

All members of NAFTA apart from Australia ironically.

It's one of the probl3ms with the free trade agreements, if a nation decides it doesn't like what a company is doing and takes action against it an international company can take it to a tribunal claiming it's investment has been harmed by a governments decision - say over environmental regulations for instance. The rulings trumo state and international law if a country signs up to it. For the first time it gives corporations power over national governments.

Obama Faces Backlash Over New Corporate Powers In Secret Trade Deal

Under NAFTA, companies including Exxon Mobil, Dow Chemical and Eli Lilly have attempted to overrule Canadian regulations on offshore oil drilling, fracking, pesticides, drug patents and other issues. Companies could challenge an even broader array of rules under the TPP language.

The secret trade deal that could let multinationals sue states - RN Breakfast - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Nothing new about big corporations overthrowing governments ir indeed national governments doing so to protect the their economic territories. The one most will know about is the coup in chile when a socialist government had the cheek to nationalist the copper mines but both iraq and iran had democratic governments replaced by ones more amenable to western (oil company ) influence. All this does is make it easier.

Who needs to make up conspiracy theories when the reality is bad enough. What democratic nation with any sense would let a corporation have that kind of power over it if the citizens understood what it is their leaders were agreeing to?
