Broadband Usage

Post by Oscar Namechange »

For the past week, I have been looking at other suppliers and wondered If anyone here could recommend an alternative broadband supplier and how you rate the service.

I have been with BT all my adult life and have a land line with them. I updated to BT Infinity, fibre optics last year and It's a dream. Touch wood, rarely have a problem. No fall out and It's quick.

However, apparently, BT are the only company who have limited broadband usage.

Up until a several months ago, that wasn't a problem as both of us with seperate laptops never exceeded our allowance.

Now, every time we get the bill, we have exceeded our broadband usage and charged extra. What we can't work out Is the fact that neither of us have Increased our usage. We are doing the same old things every day. Neither of us downloads Apps or watches anything on our laptops.

My last bill saw me phone BT and ask for an explanation and they couldn't give me one.

On my last bill, my landline calls were £14 yet our bill was £80 with the charges.

It's not that we can't pay It, but we just now have this feeling we are being ripped off. We don't want to change and then find a slower service with problems.

Thoughts ?

Can you get cable Virgin ?

I have up to 30mb broadband no limit, Telephone XL whatever that means, all landline calls included up to 1 hour redial to continue, call barring overseas calls and mobiles, plus TV thrown in free (they say) some funny rules concening 0845 type numbers (but those are general)

They catch you on Directory enquiries (or at least my wife does)

All for a basic £35 odd per month.
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

I have had no problem with service, but saying that.....if you do get a problem they are sh*te, but to be fair I should give some context.

I had a problem setting up a personal website, technicalities about my email.

It took far too long to sort out from their end.......which wound me right up.

I moved home address several times, each time a new 24 month contract......that wound me up.My most recent move I asked to take my account to my former address (I was moving to my own house after living elsewhere) They couldn't move in a decent enough time scale, then when they arrived they stuck in a Tivo Box,due to new contract, their beautiful BB and the phoneline.

The fitter was a wa*ker never asked where I wanted sockets....left without fully setting up BB, because its WiFi the router was left beside the TV......used my own ethernet cable I happened to have laying around to connect to PC.

They did send out a nice chap that fitted exactly as I wanted it later after a few calls.

My £35 odd is because I am long term and threatened to leave, I signed up for Talk Talk in fact, but Virgin made me an offer I couldn't refuse. The bill does rises due to my wife's blindness to other methods of obtaining telephone numbers.

I was actually given a hotline number to connect directly to my dedicated little helper if I encountered any further problems of any kind.

That's my concern about switching, Better the devil you know etc etc. In that respect, I can't fault BT. Any slightest problem, of which there are very few, the help line Is amazing service. If It can't be fixed on the phone, you'll get an engineer call within 24 hours and they do pay comp If your out of service over 3 days, of which has never happened even when some local scroats nicked copper wire out the junction boxes In the street.

First of all, thanks for your replies and taking the time to do that.

To cut a long story short, I got In touch with Virgin this morning and the upshot Is, because I live In a private lane, there Is no cable from Virgin Into my lane. The nearest Is In the next street and I would have to pay In excess of £800 to have this spurred off the next road.

So, back to the drawing board :-3

Because my lane Is a pedestrian rat run for the primary school next door, I began campaigning for street lighting 4 years ago. I'm still fighting. My applications get repeatedly rejected due to cost of spurring off the next street. I'm not greedy, I just want one street light given the failure to address pot holes. It always comes down to budget and lack of It.

Hi oscar

i had a look on the bt website, it says there they do offer unlimited broadband connection.

I don't know if that's only in certain areas though..

have you tried giving them a call to check it out?

a lot of our customers will pretend to change providers if we cannot give them a better deal, they end up with a special discount or extra free options, so that we can convince them to stay with us. Maybe give that a go? He who dares, wins? :wah:

My problem as I told her was that how come when we do nothing different, we are are suddenly exceeding our allowance and Incurring these charges. For that, she had no answer. She offered to Increase our usage but of course, for a higher cost.

pff well that's a shitty offer for a customer of 30 years...

I had a nice conversation with a lady who had to change her set up (tv) for a check that the helpdesk wanted her to do. I phoned her to tell her it was nothing on her side but it was our network causing the problem! She was relieved but angry her livingroom was a mess. + she had to cut down on subscription costs, and therefor lost BCC3 (she wasn;t well informed).

BBC3 was important for her, because she is from the USA, and her husband is dutch. She wants her 4 year old daughter to learn dutch and english, and bbc3 have some great programs.

I gave this lady 3 months free bcc3 (+ other channels, it's called royal channel pack), and we can now send customers a present. So I'm looking for a nice dvd or cd-rom for her daughter so that after the 3 months of free bbc3, she will still have something to practise the english language with. (obviously the customer doesn't know this yet)

BT Infinity has an unlimited option. OK, it's about £5 / month more expensive but it solves your problems

I am ashamed to admit that I didn't know that. I just never looked.

I'll phone them In the morning and ask why the woman on the help line I spoke to couldn't and didn't advise me of that even when I threatened to take my custom elsewhere. I suppose I just got a lousy call operator.

Many Thanks
