Teen pregnances drop....again

Post by Bruv »

The number of teenage pregnancies in England and Wales has continued to drop, latest figures show.

What is behind this drop do you think?

At first I thought the percentage had dropped, due to a higher rates of births overall, but it appears the actual numbers have dropped.

Why now?

Has education altered at some time and I didn't notice?

I feel a combination of factors. Education, developments In contraception and availability of contraception and changes to housing and welfare that make It now difficult for teenage Mums to go to the front of the queue.

Teen pregnancies have dropped here as well:

"The 2012 teen birth rate indicates a decline of six percent from 2011 when the birth rate was 31.3 per 1,000."

Did what exactly to their lives?

Are you suggesting that anyone having a baby before the age of 20 has their life ruined?

2+2= 5 ?

I was a young unmarried father.............................it dramatically altered my life....altered......not ruined......altered outside of my control from that time forward.

No, I'm suggesting that a fair proportion of "teen pregnancies" involve single mums, almost always involve mums who are not in secure employment (where they are guaranteed to be able to return to their job after the birth of their child) and, even where the father is still involved, not financially secure.

That's not stereotyping, it's statistical probability.

In those circumstances becoming pregnant makes life a lot more difficult and a lot less fun - not ruined, just harder.

Having seen the problems caused, the next generation might well decide not to go down that route.

Oh dear now I have to bare all?

OK quickly then.

My girlfriend was pregnant, my Father said "I hope you will do the right thing boy"

My Mother said " You are not marrying just because she's pregnant"

I virtually moved in with her.

So over the next few months it was decided that if that was the way things were, we might as well marry.

I was 18 years old on the 17th we married on the 19th.....................it lasted near on 25 years.

What's that got to do with It.

My brothers wife due to uterus surgery was unable to conceive. They lived decades without using contraception because the possibility was out of the question. Without rhyme nor reason at the age of 47, she fell pregnant. My brother was 50 years old. Suddenly, his life was altered and changed dramatically.

My point being, every single persons life changes when they have a baby and nothing Is ever the same wether they are 15 or 50 years old. My brother propably found It far tougher adapting than a teenager would.

My question to Bryn Is why he thinks a teenager seeing sisters, aunts etc be deterred from getting pregnant? But thanks for answering for him.

It Is pure assumption to suggest other wise.

I disagree about life being harder. We are not living pre or post war. In this day and age, there Is more In the way of support networks and Incentives for young Mums than we've ever historically had. Despite welfare reform, a teenager Is financially and socially catered for along with help so they can continue higher education to secure employment In the future. A lot has changed over the years and teenage Mums get a lot of help especially where there Is no family support to help them.

Stop twisting what I said.

I suggested that a fair proportion of teenage pregnancies were to single mums - I said nothing about the percentage of single mums who are teenagers.

If you discuss what I said, rather than what would make your argument easier if I had said it, then we'd have more basis for a discussion.

Oh come on Bryn... less than 2 % of single parents being teenagers Is not a ' fair proportion' as you suggested.

I have to be honest and admit that I was surprised at how low the percentage was. I tried to give you a link that would would show statistics.

If you cannot see the difference between "a fair proportion of teenage pregnancies were to single mums" and "less than 2 % of single parents are teenagers" then logic is not your strong point.

Take, as an example, a count of 100,000 single parents in the country. If 1,800 of them are teenagers then your statement is correct - less than 2% of single parents are teenagers (1.8%).

If the total count of teen pregnancies is, say, 2,500 then I would suggest that is a "fair proportion" of teen pregnancies are single mums (72%).

They are totally different measures and to try to disprove one by proving the other is ludicrous.

You have answered all your own questions already.

Better education availability of contraception...............except now they are eventually using the facilities, that have been available for many years incidently .......because they have seen that if you choose not to use contraception, it robs them of choice in their future.....................just like their sisters, aunts, ect.
