I Was Wrong

Post by Bryn Mawr »

I always thought that the gun deaths we see in the US was a result of the overly free access to guns. It would appear that I was wrong :-

Police in Iceland have shot dead a gunman - the first time armed police have killed someone in the country. In a BBC News Magazine feature originally published on 16 May, 2013, US law student Andrew Clark asked why Iceland, awash with guns, has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world.BBC News - Why violent crime is so rare in Iceland

The conclusion reached is that it's mostly down to the social equality amongst the population :-

First - and arguably foremost - there is virtually no difference among upper, middle and lower classes in Iceland. And with that, tension between economic classes is non-existent, a rare occurrence for any country.

Iceland is a homogeneous society. We have a population of every nation on the earth, every religion, every color, every language. It makes a big difference between us & Iceland. We had slaves, we lynched people, we had a Civil War that for some continue to this day. We had land to conquer, a frontier, indigenous people to kill. No real comparisons can be made.

It does show, however, that it is possible to have one gun per three and a third people and not have a high homicide rate (last year saw one murder).

It shows that there is no.... one solution fits all.

So when we compare country statistics, bare percentages don't show too much either, unless other factors are taken into account.

When all these specialists reel off their numbers to prove a point, unless they can come up with a good reason to listen, we can continue to doubt them, like we always have.

That is well put.
What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?
She had the black vote all locked up.

The difference in the statistics show that Iceland has a far more sophisticated society than the richest country on earth

It seems to show me that the more poor people a country has the more violence, iregardless if they are armed with guns, knives or clubs.

Is it an absolute measure of the number of poor people or a measure of the difference between the rich and the poor?

There are countries (such as Bangladesh) where the majority of the people live below the poverty line by any measure you care to apply but which have relatively low homicide rates.

It's not the size of the gulf or how you measure it it's the perception of the difference - (sense of injustice perhaps?) people have that matters. Have a look at other countries with high gun ownership Switzerland Finland etc

Iceland have the althing parliament where everybody has a say. They jailed their prime minister and re-wrote the constitution after the banking crisis refusing to pay for any bailouts while everybody else bailed out the banks and let the bankers away with it. oldest parliament on the planet. If people don't feel they have aren't seen as of equal worth regardless of financial worth why should they care? Except that is too simplistic a viewpoint.
