Women kept as slaves....but how often is this occurring?

Post by fuzzywuzzy »

Police rescue three women held captive for 30 years in London house - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Charity founder Aneeta Prem says the treatment of the women was "barbaric" and their liberation an "amazing story".

"You're basically looking at domestic slavery, and you wouldn't expect that to be happening in the UK, in London, in 2013," she said.

Ms Prem says she thinks the women had suffered physical abuse, but they had not reported any sexual abuse.

She says the two people arrested were the "heads of the family" in which the three women were kept.

"The ladies were absolutely terrified of these people," she said.

"They did have rooms that they could use but they were very restricted on everything they could do."

Ms Prem says neighbours were not aware of the women being held captive.

Probably more often than any of us would like to know.

This is an odd story with a lot going on beneath the surface.

It would appear from later reports that the three women were not locked into the house but were able to go out so not "captive" in the usually accepted sense.

On the other hand, they are reportedly so traumatized that it could take months to find the true story.

Some of the reports say that one reason it is difficult to get them to talk is because there is a "bond of affection" towards their captors.

ISTR a celebrity kidnapping case where this syndrome was present -got it, Patty Hurst and Stockholm syndrome.

Conditioned to behave in certain ways and then living under the threat of what will happen should you not do things 'their' way.

I'm sure there are thousands also living this way around the world.

I agree with Betty & LarsMac. I bet it's more common than we would like to think.
