I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket
Vladimir Putin's spokesman has denied a report that the Russian president mistakenly pocketed a Super Bowl ring during a 2005 visit by a US tycoon. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was quoted as saying he had shown Mr Putin the 4.94-carat, diamond-encrusted ring while in St Petersburg. "I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket," Mr Kraft told an awards gala, according to the New York Post.
[...] A Kraft Group spokesperson played down the story on Sunday, telling the Associated Press that Mr Kraft was very happy his ring was at the Kremlin and that it was a "humorous, anecdotal story that Robert retells for laughs".
BBC News - Russia's Putin rejects Kraft Super Bowl ring claim
If that's an example of Mr Kraft's sense of humor then Mr Kraft should feel utterly ashamed of himself for the rest of his life. That's not humor, that's lying, and Mr Kraft is an ill-bred nouveau riche arriviste oik[1] who uses inappropriate ostentation to mask social ineptitude.
Mr Kraft owns a football team, should anyone doubt my conclusion.

This was in the news way back then. Seems that the story went at the time Putin pocketed the ring without even looking at it according to a spokesman at the time. There's different versions of the story. He also said people were always trying to give gifts to Putin and it was standard practice to quickly and discreetly take said item. Gift giving when meeting is a strong tradition in Russia and common on all levels of society, if this did indeed happen I have no doubt Putin thought it was just that. There are most likely language and custom differences at play here too.

I say send the thing back to Mr Kraft in a bag of burning dog doo.

Nothing in the story Mr. Kraft tells actually indicates that he is accusing Putin of 'stealing' the ring.
He says it was a misunderstanding.
The press, it seems, wants to make a much bigger deal of it than either Mr Putin or Mr Kraft.

Can you imagine any socially acceptable way in which the chap would produce a garish diamond ring and show it to the President of Russia while being introduced?
Neither can I. A high-class Parisienne call-girl maybe. The President of Russia, no. And showing it with no intention of making a gift of it would be utterly naff, bordering on the deranged, in either circumstance.

We have no knowledge of the actual conversation that took place leading up to the ring exchange, it seems. I suspect that it revolved around the football team, and their recent victory.
By the Way, Mr Kraft is more than just the owner of a football team.

So, a more detailed report on the thing.
Patriots' Robert Kraft: Vladimir Putin stole my Super Bowl ring - CBSSports.com
So, maybe Putin DID steal the ring.
Maybe he just thought Kraft gave it to him.
Kraft was stupid to hand it over to Putin in the first place.
I would never hand over anything that important to me to some mobster or politician (Not that you can tell the difference, these days.)

Can anyone actually prove the ring was not stolen? Without proof, stating someone Is a liar when you are not In possession of all the facts or even know the people Involved Is some what perilous.

Robert Kraft's anecdote to the gala audience implied that he had no intention of using the ring as a gift - "I put my hand out" to take it back, he said. I've called that cobblers.
I note that my conclusion was conditional - "if that's an example of Mr Kraft's sense of humor", as suggested by his own spokesperson. I say if that's the case then his implication that Putin stole the ring puts him entirely beyond the pale.
Robert Kraft knows exactly what he can do if he disagrees with my conclusion. I'll let the thread know if I get a letter - my name address and phone number are in my profile as has been the case on this site for the last five years.

Well, technically, if there is a change of possession without the original owner's permission, that would be theft?
However, I believe there is a 7 year statute of limitations on theft.
The simple question is, Did Putin have the honest impression that Kraft was giving him the thing as a gift, or did he just take it because he could.
At least Kraft can't put the blame on Obama.
