A prisoner is told, "if you lie, we will hang you, but if you tell the truth we will shoot you!"

What can he say to save himself?

That sounds like one of those questions that my high school logic class prof would throw on a quiz. You could tell when each student reached the question by the groans.

He must say, "You will hang me."

If he is telling the truth, then they have to shoot him. But if they want to shoot him, then he must have been lying so they should have hung him. It's a logic loop and makes it impossible to do anything after that.
