PHOENIX -- When members of the student council at an Arizona high school organized a schoolwide "Redneck Day" and encouraged classmates to dress — and spoof — accordingly, they hoped to build school spirit leading up to prom week.
Instead, "Redneck Day" at Queen Creek High School has angered African-Americans and civil-rights leaders and touched off a debate about free speech, social stereotypes and good taste.
School's 'Redneck Day' sparks anger
Some people can't go to horse races because of the racism.

I don't see how that could possibly upset the Black community when it's mocking whites.

Did redneck not use to be an insult, and both a racist and class one at that. The american equivalent of chav except here that's a pure class insult - a derogatory term for the urban poor.

Christian used to be a derogatory term. Sometimes people adopt a term and take away it's negative power.

Years away from Slave Day that we had in high school. Absolutely
NO controversy with that, either.
It seems like one of those things that bringing it up creates
more around it than would otherwise be there, so is it better
to do that or not?

I think you need to keep the memory of these things alive and not sweep them under the carpet. It's part of your culture whether you like it or not - Racism and hatred don't go away if you can't express it but if you don't talk about it you can't deal with it. Which is rather trite and easy for me to say since I don't actually have to deal with it.
