The Proms go Punk

Post by Oscar Namechange »

The Proms go punk this year with The Stranglers - Music - Going Out - London Evening Standard

I find this highly amusing for the simple reason It's such a far cry from the days when we took our lives In our hands attending their concerts.

The BBC Proms are to go punk for the first time as The Stranglers join this summer’s line-up alongside Daniel Barenboim, Bryn Terfel and Nigel Kennedy.

More than 30 years after the band produced classics such as No More Heroes and Golden Brown, they will appear with former Catatonia star Cerys Matthews, folk’s Laura Marling and the London Sinfonietta in the first Prom collaboration with BBC’s Radio 6 Music and DJ Steve Lamacq.

The concert is part of an ever-broadening mix of music that also includes the first urban music Prom with Laura Mvula and London rappers Maverick Sabre and Fazer all appearing with the BBC Symphony Orchestra as well as the first concert dedicated to gospel.

JJ — Jean-Jacques — Burnel, 61, The Stranglers’ bass guitarist, said that being invited was “as cool as it gets, adding: “I think we’re the first band of a certain ilk, a certain generation, to be invited. I’m hoping it reflects the fact that we’re one of the most melodic bands around.

Not the first time they have performed with an orchestra though.
