Doesn't mean did·dly-squat to me, but to ignore the Pope's global influence is foolish.

For once I agree with TD - the guy has influence and therefore, the election of a new incumbent is significant for all of us.

It appears that this election, like all others, is political rather than spiritual :-

Just the fact that it does not happen very often makes it newsworthy, and gains attention across the new media universe.

In a shock decision from the Vatican, the new Pope is Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires. The first ever Jesuit Pope, he will take the name Pope Francis. He is known as a humble man who takes the bus to work and cooks his own meals.

Jesuit
(Concise Encyclopedia)
Member of the Roman Catholic order of religious men called the Society of Jesus. First organized by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1534 at the University of Paris, the order was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. It discontinued many practices of medieval religious life, such as obligatory penances and fasts and a common uniform, and instead focused on military-style mobility and adaptability. Its organization was characterized by centralized authority, probation lasting many years before final vows, and special obedience to the pope. The Jesuits served as a preaching, teaching, and missionary society, actively promoting the Counter-Reformation, and by the time of Ignatius's death in 1556 their efforts were already worldwide. The success of their enterprise and their championship of the pope earned them much hostility from both religious and political foes. Under pressure from France, Spain, and Portugal, Pope Clement XIV abolished the order in 1773, but it was restored by Pius VII in 1814. The Jesuits have since become the largest male religious order.

No, it's far more important than that - it's a conclave to determine who is to speak, ex cathedra, with the authentic voice of God. The conclave that is supposidly guided by God to select his personal representative on Earth.

Wasn't it a big mistake that guided them to Ratzinger? Was his election a glaring error? Didn't have the moxie to stick it out?
As for Francis I, yes he seems a swell guy. Swell.
"Other activists are angry over the positions Bergoglio, 76, has taken in recent years, as Argentina pursues investigations aimed at exposing those responsible for killing as many as 30,000 people, and finding traces of their victims. Some say he’s been more concerned about preserving the church’s image than providing evidence for Argentina’s many human rights trials.
“There’s hypocrisy here when it comes to the church’s conduct, and with Bergoglio in particular,” said Estela de la Cuadra, whose mother co-founded the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo activist group during the dictatorship to search for missing family members. “There are trials of all kinds now, and Bergoglio systematically refuses to support them.”

From a nazi pope to one that turned a blind eye to a right wing one in argentina because they were killing leftists should we be surprised? I wouldn't care what Catholics believe but they claim the moral right to ignore equal rights legislation, lecture us all on the decline of morality in society while perpetrating and then covering up the most horrendous abuses.

They're not exactly new accusations and sometimes apparent conspiracy theories are actually grounded in reality.
Surely you have heard of Los Desaparecidos of argentina and the campaign by the mothers for justice. There really were inspeakable crimes in argentina carried out by the military junta.

This is a man to whose dictates millions of people will follow. I'm not a catholic and people can follow who they like up until they start trying to dictate to non believers how they should live their lives and who is not worthy of equality.
We live in interesting times. i used to read about the religious wars in the UK and Europe and wonder what I would have done had I been faced with the same conflicts sadly qwe seem to be in the midst of a religious revival and all the accompanying hatreds are lighting up all over again. Tis sad to see imo.

Born in 1936, Bergoglio was 40 when the Argentine military forcibly deposed the government of Isabel Perón and established a military dictatorship. Cardinal Bergoglio, like many religious figures of similar age, is accused of not having worked to prevent the deaths of more than 30,000 Argentines - many of them leftists - between the years 1976 and 1983.
Bergoglio would have especially failed in not protecting the lives of two colleagues from the Jesuit order who were opponents of the Argentine dictatorship. Orlando Yorio and Francisco Jalics were taken to the School of Mechanical Armada (ESMA) on May 23, 1976, where they were imprisoned and tortured by the bodies of the repressive government of Jorge Videla, as told in the book "The Silence" by journalist Horacio Verbitsky.

Pope Francis washes feet of young detainees in ritual
ROME (AP) — Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of a dozen inmates at a juvenile detention center in a Holy Thursday ritual that he celebrated for years as archbishop and is continuing now that he is pope. Two of the 12 were young women, a remarkable choice given that the rite re-enacts Jesus' washing of the feet of his male disciples.

The 76-year-old from Buenos Aires needed to have his other lung removed as a teenager because of an infection, the Associated Press reported"

That's what an actor (or informant) must do.
Bush must act as a peace-loving president when he activated Mid-east war.
Robbie Parker must pretend to be sad when he talked to media. So did Obama.
But this picture reveals their true face.
---
That picture was created particularly to mislead people to conclude Emily hadn't died. (they let Madeline wear Emily's dress) That's a trap set up for suspicious people. It proves even the president could be obedient actor to be manipulated by the perpetrator. See how happy those actors are. Are they family members who just lost a lovely girl and after memory service, or it was a celebrating party?
