Whats it like where you live?

Post by orangesox1 »

I was driving back home after a Dr appointment in town on Wednesday, when I though I wonder what it is like where other FG members live.

Every time I go to town I drive 130 kms 65 each way, I had to go to town Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, I usually only go once a week to do my shopping, I also had to drive 110 km in the other direction on Friday to take my daughter to her friend place, after already doing 130km in the other direction.

Our towns are about 90 kms apart over here in and I only have a few small shop available to me in the small town I live, so I travel all the time, it's something that you just get used to.

10 minutes west is country and farmland. 20 minutes east Im downtown. Its very diverse here, multi cultural. My city is active, people all out and about, riding bikes, rollerblading, jet skiing, boating (we have over 12,000 lakes in Minnesota) winter sports keep us outside in the cold months, I actually like the cold weather here. We have some of the finest theatre in the country, 1st class museums, every type of ethnic food known to man. Its very pretty here, we have bluffs for climbing or hiking, Boundary Waters Canoe Area which is some of the most pristine lake country in the world.

I could go on and on I love my town.

I live in a little village not much to talk about other than it is really pretty, and there are a lot of roman remains here, they actually made a TV programme about it.

It is a programme called time team thay made it in 2001 the village had a wall that went all the way round, some of it is still there now. There are graves scattered all over in different parts. They found a skull but decided not to dig the whole grave something to do with lead i think? I only have it on video wish i could get hold of it on dvd.

I grew up in North Yorkshire in a little village on the moors, and love the English villages, but we didn't like the rain all the time so my parent emmigrated to OZ, sometimes we go years where I live in NSW with no rain at all. The English countyside is so different to out here where the fields are barron and the farmers hand feed all their stock all year round.

Nomad it sounds lovely where you are. Last time I went to the major Dam for flood boat training, (Ironic I know) there was 1% water in it, which was still quite a bit as it's a huge dam, but thats how desperate it gets here sometimes

For the six months each year that we are in California we live in an individual home on a golf course. It's a retirement Community of 3,100 homes, tennis courts, swimming pools inside and out, fitness center and other amenities. The retirement community is in a town of 100,000. We are 10 minutes from a huge shopping mall and 10 minutes from a large grocery store, 10 minutes from a large mulitpex movie complex.

For the other six months we live in a suburb of Christchurch New Zealand, in an individual home right on the estuary, 15 minutes to several golf courses, bowls, swimming and shopping centers. I like New Zealand, but love the weather in NSW better.

That must be so cool to live near ruins like that.

I live in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. I live within sight of the Saguaro National Park and have about a dozen mature saguaros on my acre. (Saguaros are those tall, armed cactus from bugs bunny and westerns) I drive through the park to get to work every day and my kids attend a Junior Ranger camp every summer there. It's really neat, but the summers are hot!

It's October and it's still 95 F everyday. Summers average 110 and winters 60F.

I live 20 minutes from the big city. I have to go there for doctor and dentist appointments so I plan my city days. I go to costco on a doctor day. I try to get at least 2 doctor days on the same day. Gas is just too damned expensive right now. I work less than a mile from my home ---WHEW

I live in the San Joaquin Valley, the agricultural bread basket of California- a desert transformed into farmland by irrigation. You have heard that it is sunny in California, well this is the sunniest place of all. Very hot and dry in the summer, and chilly in the winter, when it can get very foggy.

I am a private-practice Optometrist. I have two offices. One is on a tree-lined main street, in a sleepy, small, farm town near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The population there is probably around 10,000, mostly Mexican immigrant farm workers. I have to speak some Spanish. I am decorating this office myself in a comfortable, arty, country style.

The other office is in the county seat, a city of about 40,000 people, in an upscale shopping mall in a newer part of town where they are building a lot of expensive, new homes. This office is all new, very high tech and professionally decorated, but somewhat sterile by comparison with the other office.

I live halfway in between in a very quaint, nice little town, with an old fashioned main street known for it's antique shops. I drive 15 to 20 minutes either way, on straight country roads lined with orchards of oranges, olives, peaches and nut trees, fields of corn, vineyards, cattle ranches and dairies. Our house is on a newly built cul-de-sac where none of the houses is older than three years. On some corners here and there are little farmers' markets where you can buy fresh produce.

We're half an hour's drive from the gate of Sequoia National Park, home of the oldest living things on earth- the giant Sequoia trees. The hiking and camping in the mountains is excellent (fishing too, I'm told, but I don't have the patience for fishing). In the winter time after it snows, the Sierra Nevada Mountains look spectacularly beautiful.

It would be a better lifestyle if I did not have to work so much.
Look what the cat dragged in.

I'm in Alaska. Right now we are experiencing some fantastic weather. 40s (F) during the day and not freezing yet at night. We get some rain, but mainly pretty clear. The biggest problem (to me) is that we are losing 5 minutes a day of daylight. We're well under 12 hours now, heading for less than 5 by the Solstice. But then it starts upward again.

I live in a small town and travel three hours to a fairly large city if I really want to shop. Otherwise, for groceries and incidentals, we shop here and in another small town about 10 miles away. During the winter, we don't drive much. (That's my age talking..the roads are generally very well kept).

Sometimes I miss being in the lower 48 where I could just go whenever and wherever I wanted, but the enjoyment of living in Alaska brings me back each time I think I might make the move.

where i live is a primordial swamp, populated by rather large toothy reptiles, and even worse, men wearing hideous golf clothes. i have crystal clear caribbean waters surrounding me and a beautiful reef full of psychedelic-colored sea creatures. (and sharks:cool: ) i have hurricanes from straight out of hell, and i cannot bear the tropical heat. :-6

I live in a large 'village' on the south coast of England which has 5 schools, a small shopping area....basic stuff like chemist, Woolworths, 2 small supermarkets, pet shop etc. The Towns & vilallges here tend to belnd into one another...it is quite urban. A 'strip' of towns follows the coast, then we are divided by the next 'strip' to the north by the South Downs

From my house it takes 20 minutes to walk to the beach, and 5 minutes to walk to the downs/hills. 45 minutes to Gatwick Airport and just over an hour on the train to London. Brighton is 20 minutes away and has recently been given 'city' status. It is very diverse culturally and is a typically British seaside town which is jampacked with tourists in the summer. There is a very old part of Brighton that is called 'The Lanes'. I guess this was the bitrhplace of Brighton as a town. Brighton also has the Royal Pavillion/Regency Palace which is a beautiful building in the middle of the town. It was a holiday home to the Prince Regent (George 1V) and it was his residency in Brighton that turned it from a sleepy fishing town to a fashionable resort in the early 1800s.

There are many places of interest within less than an hours drive...Roman remains, Historic dockyard in Portsmouth where Admiral Lord nelsons Flagship 'the Victory' has been painstakingly restored and the British naval fleet is based..........There are numerous historic places of interest , nature reserves, garden centers etc..I could go on and on.....I guess I love where I live...even the diverse weather..

Loved reading everyone else's posts...what a wonderful planet we all live on.

This is what the Royal Pavillion looked like in 1826...far more built up now of course which is why Queen Victoria didn't like it and found Osborne House on the isle of Wight as a holiday home for her family (she had 9 children I think)

It's not bad where I live now, but your post takes me back. Grew up in the Tanami desert, took two days driving to get to a shop! We used to go shopping every six months. When I was in my early twenties I lived in a small town in Victoria, hour's drive to the Doctor and clothes, but we at least had a grocery shop in town. Funny though, I remember that the Milk Bars shut at 9PM so we had to remember to have enough milk. Where I live now there are service stations open 24 hours. Had to laugh recently though, my brother came over from the US for a visit and was shocked to learn that the Mall wasn't open all night!

I live out in the toolies on a dirt road (by choice), about 4 miles outside the village. When I first moved out here, there was no one within a radius of 1 mile. I was surrounded by forest on 3 sides, and pastureland on the other. Maybe 1 or 2 cars would go by in a day. Progress, however, has a way of rearing its ugly head. The acreage across from me was sold about 14 yrs. ago, and there are several new neighbors who would like to pave the road, put sidewalks in, and in general, make it as city-like as the city they left to live 'in the country'.

I drive 25 miles to work, and though the nearest local 'gouge and shop' is only a 10 minute drive, the nearest city of size is around 20 miles away.

Interesting thing about the road on which I live: It is located in a little 'weather warp'. It may be snowing/raining on my way home, but once I turn onto my road, I'll find that the ground is dry and clear. Sometimes it works the other way, too---and sometimes the weather on my road is just the same as it is 'outside'. It is kind of magical to me, and I love it.

Well....I live in a town about 15,000 people I think..I grew up here, but moved away from 11 years..glad to be home again. We have quite a bit here but still go to the city for things..I live an hour from Ames, Iowa - and an hour & a half from Council Bluffs/Omaha- about the same from DesMoines..We have a lot of corn and beans grown here...The kids have several places to go- the theater, rec center, several parks, 2 golf courses, a bowling alley & we are getting a new skate park :), we do have a SMALL mall but like I said - we go to the city for major shopping..My mom lives out by our State Park..its small but enjoyable..We are a very close community..and it's a GREAT place to raise kids!

Hey Nomad- how far from Okoboji do you live? We will have to have a cocktail maybe some summer, as thats where our cabin is..!

This is the last week-end of Balloon Fiesta here. It is really something to see 700 hot air balloons in the sky. The wind was blowing north today so a lot of them landed in our tiny town 15 miles north of the Fiesta grounds. It was very cool.
