Coca-Cola Set to Challenge Recycling Law in Northern Territory - International Business Times

In a nutshell, that Commonwealth Act, Coca-Cola stressed in an ABC report on Wednesday, states that "if a product is legal to sell in one state, it is legal to sell in another state."

"So for one state, or in this case territory, to go it alone and create a non-harmonised regulatory system, we believe breaches that Act," Wagstaff argued.

Coca-Cola fears that over the long-haul, the NT law will establish precedents that would be untenable to the interests of beverage players operating in Australia.

However, Coca-Cola's planned legal action was wholly based on its self-serving interests, according to environmental group Clean Up Australia.

Now that's crap ... S.A has had a deposit scheme ever since I can remember . Victoria stopped theirs ages ago but you still get payed for aluinum cans. So I don't know what this supposed law they have pulled out of their butt is all about .

Basically people pay an extra ten cents on their soft drinks and beer bottles etc etc . and if you return it you get your 10 cents back. (btw they have already trialed this, and the scheme has collected over 35,000 bottles and cans in a very short time period. These very bottles and cans would otherwise be strewn across our NT landscape.

Coke a cola are referring to this scheme as a "tax" on their product. It's not a tax if you're paying a deposit. Could you imagine if they outlawed "deposits" on everything? God they're full of ****!!!

That's interesting. As far as I know, they haven't challenged the recycle deposit for those states in the US that have one.

I don't see the problem.

Coca Cola in compliance with law is challenging the new regulation. Just based on the article looks like they have a good shot at success.
What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?

They are calling in constitutional law . Basically if they were to win, all recycling in australia will be deemed illegal. How's that work? when a shitty company like coke can run someone elses country? Don't think so jack!!!

Tude they are not complying with our laws ...that's just their take on it.

Don't let them do it. They're a foreign corporation and have to abide by the host laws. Hell, they're lucky the courts decided they even have standing to bring the suit. It isn't a tax on their product. If it is a tax at all, it's a tax on what contains their product. so maybe they should change the container. Sell it in paper boxes like kid's juices. That ought to do it.

I think we need to do that. What about all these weird drinks like 5 hour energy and the other energy drinks. There's no way those things can be good for you. We need a whole new way to look at this.

Do you like Gov Bloomburg limiting soft drink sizes, too?

No thanks. I prefer to make my own culinary decisions, thankyouverymuch.

This I'd agree with. Manipulating taxes to change people's behaviour is too "Big Brother" for my liking.

Hari Sheldon might have had the science to predict the consequences but we're nowhere near cute enough for social engineering yet.

That's so FUNNY! Why? Well, yes, after Ed Koch term limits were voted in by the people, including for City Council, borough Presidents, BUT after 2 terms our Mayor managed to get that overturned "Just this once" & the majority of those folks went on, with Bloomberg, to a third & final term.

Money talks. He now plans to spend his time & billions backing anti-gun candidates & issues.

Ours (the Dems' new golden child, Julian Castro) tried to make it illegal for people to smoke in their own front yard if a parade is on their street.
