AFTR's Daily Commute
For today:
Dear Abby: Valentine's Day is approaching, and I wanted to write concerning those of us who are single by choice, by circumstance, because of the death of a spouse or divorce.
This holiday was set aside to celebrate love and lovers, but it can be a lonely time for people who find themselves without a significant other. Valentine's Day is so commercialized that one is bombarded by ads for gifts, candy, etc., from every angle, which only enforces one's aloneness. The message is subtly sent — but received loud and clear — that an individual without a partner is worthless.
I would like to urge your readers this year to include those who are alone through divorce or widowhood in their celebration of this day. Make it a day on which they too can feel special, loved, and a part of things rather than isolated, forgotten and alone.
And don't stop there. All holidays can be lonely for those who have lost loved ones. Include these people in your holiday plans. You will be blessed by sharing, and they will be uplifted to know someone cares.
Solo in Texas
Dear Solo: Thank you for your letter. Readers, if you're feeling down because you don't have a special valentine, the surest cure for the blues is to do something for someone else. Call someone who's alone to say, "I'm thinking about you."
If you know someone who's in a nursing home, take some flowers. Donate some blood. Listen to your teenager. Tell your parents you think they're great. Forgive an enemy. Send a donation to a food program that benefits the needy.
And if you love someone, tell him or her NOW; please don't wait until next Valentine's Day to be a sweetheart again.

AFTR's Daily Commute
Today:
Dear Abby: Help! My husband won’t wear clothes. When our children were young, he walked around naked because he wanted to make sure they didn’t have the same hang-ups about nudity that he grew up with. (His father was ultra-conservative and uptight.)
My husband began wearing clothes again when the kids got older, but now they have all moved out and he has quit. He sits naked in his recliner to watch TV. The recliner is right next to the front door, and there’s only the storm door between him and the world. Abby, he literally strips all his clothes off to do the dishes!
We live in a neighborhood. It’s not like we’re out in the country. If I say anything to him, he says I can go into a different room if I don’t like it. Is this normal? — Nudie’s Wife in Florida
It appears to be normal for your husband. Some — not all — families are very relaxed about nudity. As long as your living room isn’t visible to the neighbors and you don’t have drop-in visitors, your husband is harming no one. If you don’t want to look at him, take him up on his suggestion.
P.S. I hope you thank him for doing the dishes. Not all husbands are so helpful.

Funny how a memory pops up in your dream. I woke up this morning with these three words, "bim bom bay" in my head. I remember it was part of the lyrics of an old pop song from my childhood. I don't remember what I was dreaming about though.
Here's a version of it:

Rainy Nights
I like the town on rainy nights
When everything is wet -
When all the town has magic lights
And streets of shining jet!
When all the rain about the town
Is like a looking-glass,
And all the lights are upside-down
Below me as I pass.
In all the pools are velvet skies,
And down the dazzling street
A fairy city gleams and lies
In beauty at my feet.

AFTR's Daily Commute
Winter Rain
I wearied of the stormy hours,
And shaped my song to murmuring words;
I longed to hear the song of birds
And watch the bloom of woodland flowers.
O waiting heart, no more complain;
The shadows fly, the morning breaks;
And, with a touch of light, God makes
A glory of the winter rain!
Where icy splendors flash and gleam
In forest depths, alone I stand:
I seem to dwell in fairy-land,
And, wondering, gaze as in a dream.
Here is the ruby's sunset dye,
The opal's blush, the diamond's flame;
And jewels rare of every name,
Thick as the stars in midnight sky.
No kingly crown is half so fair
As that which decks the pine-tree's crest;
No gems e'er shone on Beauty's breast
Like those the oak and maple wear.
The common path — in childhood known —
Transfigured now before me lies, —
A way that leads to Paradise;
An aisle with shattered rainbows strown!

Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face
by Jack Prelutsky
Be glad your nose is on your face,
not pasted on some other place,
for if it were where it is not,
you might dislike your nose a lot.
Imagine if your precious nose
were sandwiched in between your toes,
that clearly would not be a treat,
for you'd be forced to smell your feet.
Your nose would be a source of dread
were it attached atop your head,
it soon would drive you to despair,
forever tickled by your hair.
Within your ear, your nose would be
an absolute catastrophe,
for when you were obliged to sneeze,
your brain would rattle from the breeze.
Your nose, instead, through thick and thin,
remains between your eyes and chin,
not pasted on some other place--
be glad your nose is on your face!

Happiness
by Raymond Carver
So early it's still almost dark out.
I'm near the window with coffee,
and the usual early morning stuff
that passes for thought.
When I see the boy and his friend
walking up the road
to deliver the newspaper.
They wear caps and sweaters,
and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.
They are so happy
they aren't saying anything, these boys.
I think if they could, they would take
each other's arm.
It's early in the morning,
and they are doing this thing together.
They come on, slowly.
The sky is taking on light,
though the moon still hangs pale over the water.
Such beauty that for a minute
death and ambition, even love,
doesn't enter into this.
Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it.

Sonnets 04: Only Until This Cigarette Is Ended
by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Only until this cigarette is ended,
A little moment at the end of all,
While on the floor the quiet ashes fall,
And in the firelight to a lance extended,
Bizarrely with the jazzing music blended,
The broken shadow dances on the wall,
I will permit my memory to recall
The vision of you, by all my dreams attended.
And then adieu,—farewell!—the dream is done.
Yours is a face of which I can forget
The color and the features, every one,
The words not ever, and the smiles not yet;
But in your day this moment is the sun
Upon a hill, after the sun has set.
About the poet: http://www.poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/160
PS...Almost sound like lyrics to a Taylor Swift song.

The Small Business Office Etiquette Problems
Office Etiquette: Getting Along with Your Coworkers
Business Office Etiquette | Chron.com
Some of these issues exist in the small personnel office where I work. My boss is aware of these issues, but lets the negative behavior slide. Don't get me wrong....we do have a more casual atmosphere I like and occasional humor is appreciated. and enjoyed by myself as well as any other. But many times the comments are not funny, they are rude or just plain silly. I do not laugh; I ignore. Nicknames are used by other co-workers among themselves that are just childish. There are co-workers who text or make personal phone calls frequently and talk like they are home.....loudly. Friends come sit by their desks and they just chat away. You can't help but hear most everything...we work in a small office. Until these issues are addressed by the boss, they will continue. I still like my job and will continue to do my job as best as I can. I am friendly, courteous and helpful to my co-workers because I choose to be. I have also chosen to distance myself from the negative behavior and it looks like I'm in the minority. And there's the difficulty for myself I guess. I will not stoop to their level.
Now, AFTR gets off her soapbox.

The Perfect Friend
by Shannen Wrass
Today I found a friend
who knew everything I felt
she knew my weakness
and the problems I've been dealt.
She understood my wonders
and listened to my dreams,
she listened to how I felt about life and love
and knew what it all means.
Not once did she interrupt me
or tell me I was wrong
she understood what I was going through
and promised she'd stay long.
I reached out to this friend,
to show her that I care
to pull her close and let her know
how much I need her there.
I went to hold her hand
to pull her a bit nearer
and I realized this perfect friend I found
was nothing but a mirror.

and spills my soup upon the floor
It laps it up and roars for more!

blowing chicken soup with rice.

AFTR's Daily Commute
Your time has come, now hasten little snowflakes,
To vanish quite away;
The spring-tide hours are sounding gentle warnings
Forbidding you to stay.

AFTR's Daily Commute
A Blessing
by James Wright
Just off the highway to Rochester, Minnesota,
Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass.
And the eyes of those two Indian ponies
Darken with kindness.
They have come gladly out of the willows
To welcome my friend and me.
We step over the barbed wire into the pasture
Where they have been grazing all day, alone.
They ripple tensely, they can hardly contain their happiness
That we have come.
They bow shyly as wet swans. They love each other.
There is no loneliness like theirs.
At home once more,
They begin munching the young tufts of spring in the darkness.
I would like to hold the slenderer one in my arms,
For she has walked over to me
And nuzzled my left hand.
She is black and white,
Her mane falls wild on her forehead,
And the light breeze moves me to caress her long ear
That is delicate as the skin over a girl's wrist.
Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
Into blossom.

The Wind Sings Welcome in Early Spring by Carl Sandburg
(For Paula)THE GRIP of the ice is gone now.
The silvers chase purple.
The purples tag silver.
They let out their runners
Here where summer says to the lilies:
“Wish and be wistful,
Circle this wind-hunted, wind-sung water.
Come along always, come along now.
You for me, kiss me, pull me by the ear.
Push me along with the wind push.
Sing like the whinnying wind.
Sing like the hustling obstreperous wind.
Have you ever seen deeper purple ¦
this in my wild wind fingers?
Could you have more fun with a pony or a goat?
Have you seen such flicking heels before,
Silver jig heels on the purple sky rim?
Come along always, come along now.
