Exactly. How could someone so fragile survive a demanding job as a nurse for any length of time? There's more to this.

Of course you'll be happy to have her branded as a selfish mother doing that to her children before Christmas.
The sad reality is people convince themselves their families will be better off without them.

Are we to guess?
Annoyed at the dead nurse for stirring up a publicity nightmare within sight of the Palace, if we're placing bets. The British branch of the Saxe-Coburgs are notoriously self-centred and always have been.

Dear oh dear, let's try again then.
The nurse made a simple mistake. She wasn't named by the press and nobody knew who she was. The palace hadn't lodged a complaint and her employers were supporting her. To kill herself and leave her children motherless based on the circumstances does not make sense and i was agreeing with the former post that such drastic action could have been taken after other ongoing issue's within her life and not the singular cause of her death.

How is suicide NOT selfish? "devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others."
I doubt Peter would be 'happy" if she's branded as selfish but there's no doubt that she was indeed concerned primarily with her own interests regardless of others or she wouldn't have offed herself.

Probably. If I had been involved, I would have hit all the morning talk shows and tried to get a reality show out of the deal. You can bet your ass I wouldn't have committed suicide over the fact that someone's morning sickness was revealed to two radio personalities I had never heard of or cared in the least about.

I'm stunned at peoples attitude to suicide, it's a very old way of thinking.
A lot of the point is that we all have things that bring us to our knees, some things wouldn't affect half the people here but would have a profound affect on the other half. That's the point, we're all different, we all deal with issues in our lives in different ways.

I will be very very surpised indeed if passing a phone call through in error was the reason, it possible was a contributory factor.
Why has nobody questioned the Hospital procedures.....they proved to be the main fault here, I mentioned earlier, even my local hospital will not pass out information without some confirmation of the identity of the caller

Nobody would want, much less recommend, such a course. What they should both do is find a job outside of entertainment. What I suspect is that both of them are talking to agents and PR men with a view to tripling their earnings over the next few months on the basis that no publicity is bad publicity. The industry molds people to think that way.'I'll see you right' said the practical man

I couldn't agree more. We have absolutely no idea of the turmoil and pain people go through. I can only imagine it being impossibly dark and without any logical thought or reason, almost as if the decision has been made for them with no way out. I dont see it as a selfish act at all but of an act they have no control over

Sadly not, it's exactly what I think is uppermost in the minds of most people associated with St James's Palace at the moment from the top down. "Annoyed at the dead nurse for stirring up a publicity nightmare within sight of the Palace" gets it bang to rights, I think. It's extremely unamusing but it'll be true.

She was an INNOCENT woman!! Why should she be having to consider the effect on others, why didn't the presenters think it through properly, things could be very different, Kate could have lost the baby and then how would they feel! The point is they shouldn't have pulled the prank in the first place, it was not funny and it's messed up too many people's lives into the bargain. A stupid prank carried out by people desperate for a bit of fame in this pathetic media show we now live in, because nothing counts for anything unless you're famous.

So, you're slating the presenters for not thinking their hoax through about the effects It could have on others but defend the nurse although she gave no thought to the long lasting damage her actions would have on others?

They pulled what they thought was a joke without thinking it through, the nurse didn't commit suicide for a joke did she. There were many ways in which their stupid prank could have gone wrong, sadly it went disastrously wrong.
Go read about suicide and why people do it, maybe you will learn that the woman wasn't thinking about others and the consequences of her taking her life. Look deeper into it and you may find out why that is, read Snowfire's post where he agrees with me, we have no idea of the kind of hell these people go through and they are generally beyond the point of rational thought.

Snowfire agreeing with you doesn't make you right.
It wasn't hell as you put It was It ? She had full support from the hospital, the Palace made no complaint and no-one knew who the heck she was. She wasn't facing the sack from her job and wasn't facing financial ruin because of It. It had no effect at all on her family or children because she had not been named. So, If you're Insisting she was In some kind of hell, the Snooze was right all along In that there had to be more to her suicide than this.

And where have I suggested it was just this one thing that caused it, nowhere, because no one knows what else was, or was not going on. She must have been in her own personal hell, no one else can know what that hell was.
There are two types of people in this world, ones that shout and scream the loudest to get attention and then the quiet ones who internalise everything. Whilst the shouters and screamers are lapping up the attention the quiet ones are the ones taking drastic action that no one notices because the attention seekers are taking up the attention of all the other people.

There's a step between "losing their smug glow" and "losing a child", you can see if you look closely that you're trying hard to imply the latter while I'm merely content to see the former. I have no desire to see the next generation of hereditary sovereignty in the UK harmed in any way, least of all "the ruination of their first pregnancy". The ruination of their self-satisfied expensive airbrushed gloss, that I don't mind at all.
In some societies - Scotland, for one - there was a tradition of an hereditary role in a town or district, the Sin Eater. He - invariably an adult male - would call when summoned to a house of bereavement and accept a morsel of bread which he would consume in the sight of all and then leave, taking the notional sin of the deceased with him. He was a pariah, socially non-existent, shunned by his neighbours and treated as a non-person. That, in my view, is the best description I can find for the Royal Family in this day and age.
eta: from Wikipedia, on account of the attractive writing... "Abhorred by the superstitious villagers as a thing unclean, the sin-eater cut himself off from all social intercourse with his fellow creatures by reason of the life he had chosen; he lived as a rule in a remote place by himself, and those who chanced to meet him avoided him as they would a leper". Modern Royalty in a nutshell.

The nurse is a victim of her own actions. How many times have the royals been in clinics and hospitals over the years? How many jokers probably after a few beers ring the hospital for a laugh? I bet far more than we'll ever know about. The reason they've not been reported in the newspapers is because staff had their wits about them and foiled them before any damage was done. If this nurse had her wits about her, you wouldn't have seen a headline saying " hoax call foiled". The only reason this even made the news was because the nurse made a mistake and put the call through. It was her stupidity that escalated the situation which went on to make world news. Weather the radio should have tried the prank is neither here nor there because i'll bet that it's something that has been tried many times in the past and it's only the nurses actions that led this to become what it is now. The media are not going to trash the memory of a dead nurse for her stupidity so they've switched the glare of publicity, guilt and blame, now to the radio people. It's emotional sensationalist reporting designed purely to sell more newspapers and feed the minds of the hand wringers. If any blame is to be laid then look to the hospital who failed Kate's privacy rights and failed the staff by not briefing them on awareness of their royal patient.
Shame on them...

I think it's more unfair to assume there was nothing else in her life that would make suicide seem like a good idea.

It would be an extreme coincidence if the "jape" were not the trigger for the event, or if she'd be dead today regardless of whether she'd taken the call or not. Occam's Razor is a useful tool.
In English law, the fact that someone you killed in the progress of a crime had a thin skull and that most people would have survived your attack is no defence against your having murdered them. I'm not describing this event as murder, I'm merely saying that even if there were special unknown circumstances they would offer no attenuation to the disgusting act itself. Maybe she was more liable than others to react badly, I've no idea. She was still pushed to her death regardless of intent. What happened was a reckless act by two people who simply didn't care what damage they caused. We know they didn't care because they went ahead and did it.

I would like to thank the Australian radio station for highlighting the poor security that surrounds the future King and Queen.
If blame is to be laid at any one single place then the Hospital is due to take it all.
If an employer fails to supply safety gear and advice it is culpable for any subsequent harm to it's employees, customers and public.
Why there was not a robust system to stop such a phone call reaching the global celebrity in their care appears to be a deriliction of their duty to both staff and patient.
Why no Caller ID Display ?
Why no list of authorised numbers to allow access, or better still a call back to authorised numbers for 100% security, when enquiry calls were recieved ?
Surely a special reminder to all staff on duty to carefully follow laid out routines when fielding calls, possibly passing them through Katies own security first.
This is no cash strapped cottage hospital

Years ago if you rang a hospital you always got through to a switch board, mostly manned by receptionists through the day and then switched to the porters room at night. Nurses are there to care for patients not answer the telephone, yet another sad case of cutting back staff and laying more duties on others??
My local hospital is no longer hiring porters, as they retire or leave they are not replaced and the duty of moving patients around the hospitals falls on the health care staff. Meanwhile it probably took four managers to come up with that cash saving idea .

I don't believe It has anything to do with staff cutbacks to save money...
In the past, when I've had to phone BT I get to talk to someone Mumbai. It has been at times Immensely frustrating because often, he can't understand me and I and Peter have struggled to understand them. Calls Invariably see both of us asking them to repeat over and over. Peter has no regional accent and speaks like a toff In clear cut English yet he Is asked to repeat himself also.
Unfortunately, this lady was Indian.
When the tape was Initially aired on tv... after the first line, both of us said ' No way would the Queen ask to speak to her Grand daughter, Kate Is an In Law'... then, apparently, the call was In the early hours of the morning.... The Queen herself would not be phoning at that time of night..... anyone else would have picked up on those two Initial bloopers right away.

Two Australian DJs behind royal hoax call have gone into hiding as it emerges one is 'close to breakdown' | Mail Online
So while all those so quick to write threads such as ' Shame on them' and hacks fill our newspapers laying the blame solely on the presenters, one of them Is now so distraught she Is at risk of self harming. While we talk about the hell the nurse must have been In, no-one It appears has given any thought to the two young people who have had their lives destroyed.
The nurse made a mistake but because she killed herself, she's the victim.
The two young presenters made a mistake and the world wants to destroy their lives.
It's not the presenters fault that the hospital failed and It's not their fault the nurse made her mistake. From the tape, you can clearly hear their amazement that they got through In the first place... they can not be held account for stupidity and failed hospital procedure,
I hope the do gooders are satisfied now for ruining the lives of these two young people and If god forbid, the girl does harm herself because of the circus of world media attention, then perhaps that will bring them all some kind of comfort after this witch hunt.

I agree with you oscar. While the nurse's suicide is so shocking, to blame it on silly DJ's playing a prank for entertainment purposes is over my line. I remember Howard Stern calling in to an Italian hospital when Kurt Cobain tried to kill himself on tour. It was silly & dumb, but funny, the humor that was present in the movie 'Dumb & Dumber'. The Italian staff saw the humor in it, Howard Stern was his absurd self, & Kurt Cobain returned home to kill himself there. I read with great interest everyone's remarks on this & I see it can be analyzed to micro pieces & have relevance & importance, but, in the end, silly dumb nonsense for humorous intent ended very badly. No one wanted or could have predicted it would conclude this way. I wish the DJ's would come out boldly instead of hiding. They did nothing wrong.

I'm quite sure they do feel shame, that's all I expected, at no point do I wish to see them being hung drawn and quartered. The radio station needs to feel the shame too along with the lawyer who ok'd it to be aired. If you put the suicide aside, it was still too sensitive a subject to be playing a hoax with, I'd still feel the same even if there had not been a suicide.

No one wanted or could have predicted it would conclude this way. I wish the DJ's would come out boldly instead of hiding. They did nothing wrong.Four years ago, I made a mistake. The local paper rang me and asked me for some Info as to what happened. Two days later I was In The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, The Sun and many more. Then, they tracked my every move for the next year and a half. Whilst It was entertaining to read on a daily basis what I was supposed to have said, I never spoke to them, they were there everywhere I went. They even tried finding my Father to talk to him when he had died. Even the police breached sub judice law by talking to the press before any evidence was heard In court. When It did get to trial, 4 of my so called victim's mates ratted on him and told the judge exactly what he was doing. Then because I was In newspapers every day, people thought I was public property and would approach me In the street, phone my house and even call at my home. In the end, the media attention and unwanted Interest became so Invasive that my lawyer appointed me a PA so no-one could get to me except through him. Although most of the attention was positive, It affected our kids and our families and I even had to stop going to the local shops because of unwanted attention. After my trial, I then found I was the subject of 73 Internet sites with complete strangers who knew nothing about me, were not there on the day and were not there In court deciding what really happened.
Until you have ever been In that situation, you can not Imagine In your wildest dreams how It affects your life. I had a very small taste of It and It's why I'm so angry about why these presenters are being hounded In a witch hunt that's now destroyed their lives.

This is the most bizarre post, Oscar.
You've sat here arguing that there is no way that these folks should be blamed because quite obviously the nurse had to have had issues other than this isolated incident, in order for her to have taken her own life.
Yet, at the same time, you are arguing that if this DJ were to harm herself over this incident, it is someone elses fault.
You need to make up your mind, IMO.
I don't want them to harm themselves any more than I wanted the nurse to harm herself.
The persons ultimately accountable, IMO, should be the legal department that gave the okay to air this. If patient information is protected, that should have been the end of the prank.

To clarify:
The events that led to the nurses suicide were a chain of events that Included lax hospital procedure and the mistake made by the nurse.
These sort of radio and TB pranks have been played since the dawning of time but don't make world media attention. This one did because the nurse made the mistake of putting them through. She had not been named, no-one knew who she was, she had support from her employers and colleagues and no complaint had come from the Palace. If she had not of killed herself, this would now be old news. Because of a silly mistake which many nurses make during their careers, she killed herself leaving two young children. For that I believe there had to be other Issue's In her life.
The two radio presenters were sorry for their prank but as soon as the nurse was pronounced dead, the world media turned on them. Had the nurse not have killed herself, they would have got on with their lives and within weeks, It'd have been forgotten and old news. The fragile state the presenters are now In Is because globally, they have been held ultimately responsible for the nurses death. Mistakes were made In the hospital and weather the prank should have been played or not, Is not the Issue. Two young people are now being held accountable by the worlds media for something that the hospital should be taking the blame for,
It's the ensuing witch hunt after the nurse was reported dead that I object to.
It's the hypocrisy here... while the do gooders bleat the nurse was embarrassed and put through hell, the world now actively seeks to put the two presenters through hell.

I'm speechless, that poor nurse!
Personally, I agree 100% with Ms Boop.
Of course anyone with half a brain knows that those two silly so called DJs in Australia did not kill the late Jacintha Saldanha. However, she committed suicide as a direct result of the hoax they perperated upon her. Naturally they were not to know that she would have "lost so much face" by what she must have regarded as a gross faux paus on her part, that she saw the only way out was to kill herself.
The tragedy of it is firstly, that something as mediocre as morning-sickness indirectly caused the death of this young mother, and secondly that the birth The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first baby will now forever be associated with this tragic event.
