You can see why it's happened - the outgoing governor prosecuted for Mafia links, the traditionally dominant party in total disarray and the very low turnout skewing the demographics.

I can see odd results happening here too as the man in the street becomes more and more disenchanted with politics and leaves the field to the more extreme element who will vote come what may.

What's him being gay got to do with his ability to clean up Sicily's organised crime ?

Whether or not he has the respect and support of the people by the sound of the report.

That it shouldn't do goes without saying. That it does in places like Sicily also goes without saying.

Nothing, but in a macho culture like Sicily being gay, you would think, would render him unelectable. Don't forget not too far away in italy you have the head of the church preaching that homosexual acts are contrary to nature and God’s wishes and must be a sin. Your friend nick is also in favour of a bit of gay bashing, presumably as a good christian and defender of our Christian ( though being a nation of heretics we are all doomed) values he agrees with the pope and will be able to explain the concept of mortal sin to you if you are unfamiliar with it. How many gay members does the BNP have?

To come out as gay must take considerable courage in a place like Sicily.

Back to the BNP again ? Have you had a northerly gust up your sporran? You're very grumpy lately.

Grumpy is such a basically nice word don't you think? Sort of I'm bad tempered but basically awfully nice underneath. The correct vernacular is crabbit.

I think if we are honest about it, it still does in most places, regardless of the politically correct face folks put on it.

What i find interesting is thatv often in places where you expect there to be bigotry and hatred people are the most open to accepting others as they are. The church has a hang up about homosexuality I suspect most ordinary italians (and it's just my opinion ) don't really care and prefer to judge people by how they treat others. Besides a church that covered up systematic child abuse has arguable lost the moral high ground for anyone with half a brain.

I've always regarded the Italian much as the French... open and up front, and to hell with anyone who doesn't like It.
