I was talking to a greek a few weeks ago and he was telling me about hte politics there . Seems if you want to build a house you only pay tax on it once it's completed. So there are many houses in Greece that are deliberately unfinished ...and you 'choose' to pay tax in other areas as well. It's apparently a well known cultural (?) thing .

I have heard the most Greeks don't pay what they should. It's kind of like that in Russia just slightly different. At least there the corruption is equal across the board if not in rubles then at least in opportunity.

It used to be that if you left the strengthening rods sticking out of the tops of the walls and claimed that you were going to add another floor you avoided paying tax but I think they've finally closed that loophole. When I was in Crete a couple of weeks ago they told me that any building connected to the electricity supply was now due to pay.
