I love Hi-Tech and if I ever won a LOTTO, would probably spend a big chunk on all the great hi-tech stuff available.

I wonder however, how much of the conversation on cells is really necessary. Frankly, I don't like sitting on the toilet at the airport, lsitening to the guy in the next stall lie to his girlfriend about where he is (still at the office says he).

I would have loved to had a cell phone during my working career, to call clients, re-arrange appointments, check the office for messages and yep, tell the wife what time I would be home for dinner. That sure is better than the old days of pulling into a gas station in the rain to make a call. But some of the stuff I overhear people talking about is plain Bull---t. It's really quite incredible all the cellphone activity I see. Every other person in a car, the mall, on the street, supermarket, doctors office, has got a cell stuck to thier ear.

What amazes me is the amount of kids using them!!

How can they afford it??

I know of several teenagers who ring Mum or Dad and quickly say 'call me back', and so they do, their phone bills must be unbelievable!!

My son asked for a phone for his 8th birthday, I said no way!!!

And, why do people have to shout when they answer their mobiles???:wah:

My students carry much more expensive cell phones then I have, which I carry to make sure I have constant contact with my home. They are always taking them out and playing games on them during class time, and if we take them and have the parents come up to collect them we get yelled at by the parents. (not the administrators) My kids got a cell phone when they went to college, I never saw the need before that-if they were out using the car, they took my cell for emergencies only.

As a single mother, I found it necessary for the youngest and I to keep in touch. Yes Bills can get high. as she is starting to use the phone for more than just calling me so every now and then I take the phone away for a week. Hugely reduces the bill. As well with older teen driving, when in the car on her own, she must take my cell phone along.

I watch the bills closely and the girls loose privledges if the privledge is abused, Jr teen looses phone, Sr. teen looses driving privledges and phone.

Cell phone use is out of control!!! Its use should be "banned" in "Public' places, same as the ban on "NO Smoking is!!! :-5

I have two and they never leave the house, they sit on my lounge windowledge.

I have one for sending text messages and one on contract, i get 750 mins per month free so i use that for calling people on, i use about 200 mins per month and i carry the mins over, i lose more mins that i use!

I think there are some people who think it makes them look "important" for them to constantly have their cell phone to their ear. Like they are popular or the world won't spin without them. "We are not impressed".

I have one, but we also don't have a land line phone in the house. I take it with me when I'm out and about so that my son's school can reach me if there is an emergency. I don't yak on it constantly. I'm too busy doing other things. My kids are not getting one anytime soon, that's for sure.

Also, what the heck are kids doing with them in class? They need to be in their lockers. If mommy or daddy need to reach them, they can call the school office (like they did before cell phones when I was in school many moons ago!) and leave a message. They don't need to be messing with them in the classroom. The high school in my town has banned them altogether. They cannot even bring them into the school, which of course caused a ruckus, but too bad. For once, someone had some sense.

So many times I have nearly answered someone in the supermarket who's asking "which brand of baked beans shall I get?" or "I can't decide what to eat tonight, what do you suggest?" only to find they're chuntering away on a mobile phone.

You can be a cell phone user and not be a jerk. It's as simple as leaving the table and going into the restroom or lobby to take your call. Not chatting while a clerk is ringing you up at the store. Not answering in a movie theater or library. Turning it on vibrate when you're in a public place. And if it's just someone calling to chit chat, do you really need to answer it right at that moment? After all, that's what voice mail is for. If it's important, the caller will leave a message. Also, there are nifty hands free devices for use in the car. I've found using a speaker or headset makes talking on the phone no less distracting than talking to the passenger next to me. But then, I guess it's cooler to talk with your phone to your ear, so everyone can see it. It's kind of like the millennium version of what bling was in the 90s.

I completely agree...I was having dinner with a friend one night...sort of a Girls Night Out...and her phone rang. I didn't mind her answering because we both have small children and we both thought it might be her sitter calling. Well, she chatters away for 20 minutes about NOTHING with another friend that was calling for no reason other than to talk, which is fine, but HELLO!!! She was having dinner with ME and I thought she was being incredibly rude. I almost got up and left. She didn't even apologize. I would have told the caller that I was glad to hear from her, but I was spending time with another friend and that I would call her back another time to visit.

I have seen people almost break their necks to answer the phone. I agree that is what voice mail is for. I don't run around like a chicken with my head cut off to answer my phone. If I miss the call, I have caller ID and voice mail.

Some people need to GET A LIFE!

Banning smartphones at school does not improve academic grades and children’s wellbeing, a study suggests.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham did find that spending longer on phones and social media in general was linked to lower grades, poor sleep, disruptive behaviour and a lack of exercise.

But these outcomes did not differ between schools that banned phones and those that did not.

The study, published in the Lancet’s Regional Health Europe journal, also found that attempts to restrict phone use at school did not lower the overall time children spent on their devices throughout the day.

Given those results it would be reasonable for a school to reconsider its outright ban.

There's a behavioural message in merely having a phone at school - politeness. It's simply good manners to have the phone set to silent, no vibrate, and out of sight during each lesson.

Other than that I think allowing students to carry a phone at school offers benefits. Any student can then provide proof of ineffective or harsh teaching in a classroom, and of bullying incidents in general while they're on site. I think that empowerment would be a good thing, not a bad.

I suggest outright bans on using a phone at school are misplaced. The Lancet is an authoritative source when it comes to studies of this sort, I don't think their conclusions can be lightly dismissed by less opinionated reportage.
