A dose of sanity in an insane world.

But the sentence sums up the whole approach of Norway to a terrorist attack that may well have destabilized other nations. Others capitulate to terrorism by becoming more authoritarian, intolerant, repressive societies: their politicians pass laws clamping down on civil liberties. Would a British Prime Minister strike the same note of defiance of Jens Stoltenberg in the immediate aftermath of the horror?: “The Norwegian response to violence is more democracy, more openness and greater political participation.” Norway played the whole case by the book, imposing what is the maximum sentence under the country’s law. The message was clear: Breivik will not change us.

I can't get my head around the sentence... surely he could never get parole In ten years time.?

But some Britons have expressed their revulsion that a man who murdered 77 people received a sentence of just 21 years, or three months and eight days per victim. In truth, he can never be released so long as he is judged to pose a threat to society.
I find the verdict amazing, but I agree entirely with it.

I agree also. It shows a mature, civilised and cultured people who refuse to toe the intolerance to civil liberties. We could learn so much from them

He won't so long as a judge decides he is still a threat to society, effectively he will be in prison until he dies denied the chance to be a martyr to his cause. It's an extreme example of the kind of things members of the political right are capable of in the right circumstances. He's a christian white supremacist no different from those in the states or elsewhere he just acted on it because he thought his countrymen were sheep who would be intimidated. Nowadays we have Islamofascist and christofascist that would both destroy liberal democracy if they could they both see tolerance as a weakness.
