TAMPA – Air Force officials are trying to figure out why an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III cargo jet heading to MacDill Air Force Base instead landed at Peter O. Knight Airport this afternoon.

Surprise. Well trained pilot made such a big mistake.
I wonder how those 911 hijakers who had no experience to control a Boeing could fly to their destination and accurately hit their target - all three of them. They must be genius.

The main runway at Peter O. Knight is 3,580 feet long and 100 feet wide, aligned in the same direction as MacDill’s runway that is 11,421 feet long and 151 feet wide.
Genuine mistakes when two runways are In close proximity to each other my husband tells me, however 9/11 ? Yes, that's something else.

"I suspect we are going to see fatigue may have played a fairly significant part of this," he said. "They had come quite a distance."
Bressendorff wouldn't say how long the flight had been, just that it originated in southwest Asia.
"That's halfway around the world," Cox said.
A tired pilot might have just seen what he expected to see.

I could only find one "real" news source for the story after a cursory search. Most of the discussions appear to be on forums, youtube and conspiracy theory websites.

The part I find strange about this is air traffic control - or the lack of it.
The article states that control had been handed over to MacDill ATC, they should have had the 'plane on radar and have been in fairly constant communication with the pilot - checking rate of descent, distance from the runway, possible collisions, etc.
It is not as if MacDill was likely to have been rushed with multiple landing of lumps that size.
Why did no-one say "excuse me, you appear to be off course" at some point?

You're right, it sounds more likely that ATC screwed up.

There has to be much more to this story than the Air Force is letting on.
They would have to have over-flown McDill AFB to approach this airfield from the bay side.
