Quite shocked at the news. I used to love the Monkees TV series in the 60s.

The only real musician in the group was Michael Nesmith and none of us in my class thought he was cute at all. This would have been about 3rd or 4th grade so I figure the big sideburns scared us.

I have it in mind that a lot of the attraction of the group was the hits, and that the group imported the hits from song-writers. Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart, Neil Diamond, John Stewart of the Kingston Trio. They're the reason the group had impact, the members were effectively models who ended up so exposed to music that they became musicians of a sort eventually. Admiring the creators makes more sense.

I'm glad Davy Jones had the breaks and got what, presumably, he wanted. How could anyone not like the image.

All performers, solo's bands whoever whatever have to have an appeal and a stage presence, You can have the greatest song ever written by a genious but If the band that performs It and mainly, the front man has no skill or stage presence, It means nothing as my example demonstrates.... Davy Jones was also a writer and acomplished actor.

A part of the attraction were the hits....the other part is that Davy was singing them. To young teens it did not matter who wrote them it was the fact that Davy Jones all of 5'4" was singing the words to them. The Monkeys were a fun thing!

Yes, they did become musicians and very well loved by many young woman.

And as you say, "I'm glad Davy Jones had the breaks and got what, presumably, he wanted. How could anyone not like the image."

So you don't enjoy opera then or any kind of classical music because the people singing or playing didn't write their own material? You can admire the composers but they are nothing without good performers they're why we remember them. It's the songwriters and performers together that make up the whole, but it's the ones with the talent to do both and the ones that can go on to acquire the talent to write their own songs that we really remember. Even usain bolt learned to walk first

I enjoy opera and classical music but it's rarely the case that I come away with any idea of who was performing, I go to admire the composition and, at the opera, for the direction. It's true that there are occasional superlative performers like Izak Stern or Stephane Grappelli or Yehudi Menuhin or that Russian chap with the piano - but in general if I go to an evening of someone playing Scott Joplin then I come away having been entertained by Scott Joplin and should I ever manage to get to the Bayreuth Festival I'll have been entertained by Richard Wagner.

A while back I saw a set by Legend - A tribute to Bob Marley and they really were very good indeed. What I came away with was an impression of how much I'd have enjoyed seeing Bob Marley on stage. I particularly admired the stage presence of Michael Anton Phillips but it was Bob Marley's night.

Take Leonard Rossiter... He will forever be remembered as Rigsby or Reggie Perrin. Now, he didn;t write the scripts or create the series did he... but no other actor could ever be Rigsby.

Same with Richard Wilson who will always be remembered as Victor Meldrew. He didn't create the series either.
