Call to end smacking ban...
That whole article makes me cringe, I can't be bothered to wade my way through the pile of crap that it is. We are allowed to smack children, the law stops us abusing them.
He argued that the law should now be reversed because smacking is a vital way of disciplining children, particularly for single mothers in inner cities where gangs and knife crime are rife.

Single mother dig again, ermmmm sorry but as a mother of a teenage lad all I can see is that if spent my time smacking him he's just going to belt me back! Let's face it most lads end up taller than their mum's I'm not at all convinced that single mums are wanting to actually hit their children.
If I were a child today I'd be hoping my parents were lib dems according to that article, what a pile of poppycock. :wah:

I think you have misinterpreted what they meant by 'smacking could have prevented riots'.
I Interpreted that as, If they were smacked at an early age, the Mother may have been able to Instill some discipline while they were young which In turn may have prevented them as teenagers from looting and rioting.

Perhaps the most obvious interpretation is the right one - "if [I'd] spent my time smacking him [as a small child] he's just going to belt me back [when he grows big enough]".
The Mail presumably increased its sales among the reactionary bloody-minded by including the article, I can see no other reason for writing such offensive tosh. Does nobody remember Wuthering Heights, for example? Smacking children at any age is counter-productive in the long term.

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

He's an immigrant, send him back to wogland that's what I say. (sorry, that was the secret BNP part of me speaking)
You know what maybe if we had more riots those pillocks in parliament would begin to understand the real issues people are having to contend with. Families losing their homes and jobs while the bankers debate wheher to take £million as a bonus in shares or cash. It seems if you steal a sandwich you go to jail, fiddle your expenses and get caught all you need to do is say I'm very very sorry and i won't do it again, ay least half the MO;'s shopul;d be in prison and Tony Blair and |Gordon brown on trial for gross stupidity

If you can point me In the direction where I have stated I agree with the article, then we can progress.

Where on earth have I implied you agree with the article?
It's a good reason not to just post a link with no comment though. That way people will have something to clutch if they find themselves responding.

Out of interest, what is this "smacking ban" of which the headline speaks and which single mothers are enjoined by the article to protest against?

I suppose the parents of convicted teenagers taking part In the riots are prone to the excuse that It's all the Governments fault for not allowing them to assault their children when young rather than face the prospect of just being a lousey parent.

Why would they think that? The government does allow them to and always has.

So. Smacking's still legal in the UK then and always has been.
You'd think that any domestic corporal punishment which would have affected the riots would have occurred under previous legislation, wouldn't you. How does this new provision affect the argument?

It doesn't.
Under the laws, smacking of any kind Is considered pretty vile by nurseries, schools etc. The complications of the law leave many parents unsure of exactly what they can and can't do so tend to refrain from smacking all together which can only be a good thing.
